I consider myself more of a "counter insurgency" veteran than a "war" veteran

in my mind, that distinction is reserved for WWI, WWII, and Korean War vets

combat against a squadron of Panzers would have been much different from my combat against illiterate Afghans with AKs and IEDs

Granted, Nazi Germany was a far more formidable opponent, but those men and women who died in Afghanistan deserve no less respect than those who died in Europe.

If you went to a conflict on your country's behalf you have earned the right to call yourself a veteran.
