If you do things right, and you have the business savvy to back you, you can make trades with they gym owner. Help him manage for free, collect 100% or find a gym where you are the only trainer and the median income for the area is over 6 figures.

You learn as you go. Make contracts, learn to sell, be good at what you do so you get the referrals on top of it.

Certified personal trainer is a joke. Most certifications take a week of training. Then many of these guys act like they are the last word in knowledge of all training matters.

I don't know if this happens in other parts of the country but almost all gyms in NJ will not let an outside personal trainer train clients in their gym. Only their own trainers can work with their members. The gym's trainers main job is to sell contracts for membership not personal training.

The only ones making money are the ones in business for them self. Usually steroid users who have their clients convinced they are built because of knowledge when they would look like crap without the drug assist. The other is the guy who has professional athletes working out in his gym. They take credit for the athletes success claiming it's their expertise in training that made the athlete. In NJ a cop helped his son open a gym in a rich town. The area didn't have a decent gym until they opened and they had a lot of professional football players living in the area from the NY Giants and Jets. Soon the gym had many pro football players working out there and the guy soon started taking credit as the trainer to the pros. He's now considered a guru and division 1 players and high school players from all over seek his advice.

In all fairness, in almost any trade they require a certain amount of CEU's to maintain the original cert, degree, etc. So if a trainer says they have multiple certs its usually because they are adding o the CEU's.

what's wrong with that?  I'm not even a trainer by trade and I have people coming up to me and ask me to train them. what I do is just throw out a stupid number that will scare them off. But I still have two clients that didn't blink at my fee and I've been training them for two years. one is an older gentlemen who has lost 20 pounds and kept it off, and vastly improved his muscle tone and posture. the other is a guy in his 30's that wanted to be jacked, and I got him jacked.  I got certified a hundred years ago just to do it, and it payed off. I make GOOD fucking money off these guys for a few hours work a week.

Personal training is no different than slavery or any starter position..for the business owner, you are just another form of income coming into the balance sheet. I myself was a personal trainer in college...it took me about 3 months to realize that it was a scam position..some fuking retard at la tried selling me the dream most recently...poor bastard...someone that sells you the dream of financial independence via helping people loose weight is no different than selling snake oil..
