Lets not forget how good Sonny Schmidt was.
He took on the world with very little knowledge, a tight budget, no gurus.
Placed top 6 in his first Olympia as an unknown.
I remember you telling us at one of Sonny's seminar's (William Chung Gym Dandenong) not long after the '91 Olympia how Lee Haney was blown away by the size & conditioning of Sonny on his Olympia debut & approached him afterwards, saying "You were robbed man".

The '91 O' will go down as one of the greatest Olympia's ever & Sonny clearly deserved to place higher & would have had he been a more established name.

Those were the Golden Years.... and why I got hooked on bodybuilding.   It's all changed now.

Tony...thanks for the pics.  Sonny was so under-rated.  What caused his death? he passed too young!  And you said his brother passed too??

Thanks man.  Big compliment.  I'm still trying to stay in shape.  But competing days are over.

He took on the world with very little knowledge, a tight budget, no gurus.
Placed top 6 in his first Olympia as an unknown.

He built his body on carbs, you have never seen anybody eat more rice than him. 3 meals a day, never counted calories and still made it.
I laugh at all the people, guys and girls that get a prep coach for their first contest or take a year off work to do a novice show.

Sonny was the most humble person I ever met, he taught me so much and I miss him to this day.

Never heard anyone who knew Sonny say anything bad about him. It was all praises.

Thanks for the pics and the stroll down memory lane.

Interviewing Lee Haney around 1992.

Lee was a gentleman and very easy to work with. When he first arrived at the show, I had not yet seen him as he had been in another Australian city before Melbourne. So I am backstage looking forward to meeting up with him and I open a box of statues I had shipped in. Unbelievably all the heads had come off the statues in transit. So by the time Lee got to the show I'm in my suit, sitting on the floor super gluing the heads back on. He looks down and with a big laugh says "what kind of promoter are you, putting the trophies together right before the show" I got up, explained the situation and had a good laugh with him.

It was the year that he had retired, so he was pretty relaxed. A week later in Sydney we went out for a bite to eat after the show and ended up knocking back a few beers, which I thought was about the coolest thing I had done in bodybuilding at that point. As a young bodybuilder, I thought Lee Haney was the best thing since Arnold, so getting to know him and having a laugh and a few beers just topped it off.

PS please ignore the savage ponytail. (No excuse)

Rone Love with Sonny backstage somewhere a long time ago.

Both great guys to be around that both got caught up with the wrong crew. Both made some bad choices and paid the price.

Ron was always in a good mood, I had him on several tours and always enjoyed his company. He was humble and always grateful. The ladies loved him and so did the fans. Ron had a smile that could light up a room and was just plain fun. I was pretty new at promoting and very young for a promoter. Ron treated me great respect, always showed up in shape and had time for everyone.

Chris, Flex and Dexter at the IronMan Pro LA 2000.

Chris absolutely dominated the show and won it again. What an atmosphere.

This show, for many reasons was the catalyst for me starting the Australian Pro the following year.

Chris and I have been mates ever since.

The late great Sonny Schmidt (* September 9, 1953 - † January 25, 2004) originally from Samoa but competing for Australia @ 1991 Mr. Olympia. Sonny finished sixth.

Yates wasn't an established name in 91 , just saying.
