Gus was awesome.  So calm, collected, calculating, cold blooded.   Unfortunately though, through his appearance in BB initially we got enough of his back story to know what is going to happen and where he originally came from.

However, I have to say that Marie was THE most annoying character in the whole damn show.  I was hoping Walt would show up and rabbit punch her in the throat just for sheer principle.

Skylar was pretty damn nerve wracking too.  I used to just fast forward through the parts with her and Marie in it.

the problem with this idea is Saul.  Breaking Bad worked because it had believable characters that underwent personal transformations of moral rights and wrong.  It was that process that intrigued people.  Saul wasn't a character he was a caricature.  From the sleazy office, tacky comb over, and bimbo assistant he was a walking cliché.  A real weakness in a cast of excellently written characters.

you're right... but they do have a chance to completely develop him and show other sides of him.

We saw the side that he put on for the world - an obnoxious attorney.   Maybe we'll see personal struggle, development, wins and losses... I don't know how I would do it, but I just KNOW that writing/producer team is just so smart at what they do... they'll do it, and it'll work.

Why?

The show ended fantastically. It was a story about Walter White becoming Heisenberg, Breaking Bad. It ran on its own terms and ended on its own terms. It doesn't need people shoehorning story in to a dead horse, ala Supernatural.

Bob Odenkirk and Jonathan Banks have been joined by the first brand new cast member to the Breaking Bad universe in prequel series Better Call Saul. Michael McKean will be joining the show, Deadline reported yesterday, and he’ll be playing Dr. Thurber, an attorney who has “an unusual affliction.” We don’t know what that means, but we do know that McKean starred in a handful of X-Files episodes co-scripted by Vince Gilligan, who is the creator of Breaking Bad and co-creator (with Peter Gould) of Better Call Saul. McKean played a government operative named Morris Fletcher who ends up switching bodies with Fox Mulder in that show’s only comedic two-parter, so maybe Dr. Thurber’s strange affliction will be that he’s actually David Duchovny in disguise. Considering that both Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul starred in X-Files episodes before being cast in Breaking Bad, maybe Gilligan will reach out to Tony Shalhoub, the man who starred in his first script for that show, to fill some other role in Better Call Saul. Michael McKean, of course, has starred in 50 million cool things beyond just The X-Files and Laverne & Shirley, but what you best know him for is probably This Is Spinal Tap, so just start quoting that movie in comments like you know you want to.

http://www.nerdist.com/2014/05/better-call-saul-adds-orphan-black-actor-and-two-others-to-its-cast/

BETTER CALL SAUL Adds ORPHAN BLACK Actor and Two Others to its Cast

No, unfortunately Tatiana Maslany has not been cast to join AMC’s Better Call Saul (though we would not hate that in the least). But! There are three other names that have been added to the Bob Odenkirk dark dramedy, and one of them is a former Orphan Black cast member. Don’t you love it when things you love cross-pollinate? Showbiz, man! Michael Mando (better known as Vic to all you Clone Clubbers) is set to join the new series alongside two other new hires: Patrick Fabian and Rhea Seeborn. And so the Breaking Bad universe expands!

Joining the recently announced Michael McKean/Dr. Thurber (which we are very excited about), Mando, Seeborn, and Fabian are set to star in the series, filling previously announced roles. Clone Sarah Manning’s former drug dealer flame Vic will tackle a similarly bent role as Eddie, “a smart and calculating criminal who knows the ropes.”

Fabian — whom you may know from his stints on Big Love, The Newsroom, or the 2010 film The Last Exorcism — will man the role of Burt, a “Kennedy type” who’s “winning at life in addition to being a name partner at a firm.” Whitney and Franklin & Bash star Seehorn will fill the part of Beth, another successful lawyer at the firm that’s said to have her “already difficult life complicated by her romantic entanglements with somebody else at the firm.” So… do we think that somebody else is Goodman, Thurber, or Burt? Or… what if it was Mike Ehrmantraut (a.k.a. the confirmed to be returning Jonathan Banks)? There are so many options here.

Given the fact that Mike ended up stuffed in a barrel I don't think I would like to see him in this prequel.

Too late!!! The spinoff should have started before the end of the show

I loved it but now I'm ready for something new, not a spinoff with a minor character

I saw an interview with odenkirk and in it he said the show jumps around in time.  Some of the show takes place after breaking bad. I'm not sure how that will work.

The Character is almost a moot point.  You're watching because very talented people that have
a stellar track record are producing the show.  This isnt some dumbass happy days spinoff.  I would bet my hat that it goes in a completely original and unexpected direction.

Think Larry David.  Seinfeld and then Curb

The Mike Ehrmantraut cameo was cheesy and ridiculous. A hitman working as a parking attendant? Yeah, ok.

I hope it doesn't drop a cheesebomb like this every episode.

The first episode was really good, it doesn't feel like it needs to hold on to Breaking Bad for support.

mike was a philly cop that got into trouble.  So maybe he limped to AZ or NM and got a job as an attendant right afterwards.  Yes, he had brains and skills to be a hitman, but maybe they're showin us the link between PD and Gus' job.

i haven't seen #1 yet, just the preview, about to watch them both.

I just watched it, thought it was great.  Not "mind blowing omg" great but good enough to keep me tuning in for another episode or two at least and doesn't just seem like a BB re-hash yet.
