No surprise that the coaches aren't concerned with the risks, as it's an 'extreme' sport of sorts.
When people fly in a wingsuit, i'm sure they know it could go pear shaped.
Accidents can happen with any physical activity, sure, but the difference when doing regularly hypertrophy/weight training is that you would KNOW 100% if you were pushing things too far. Crossfit - i'm not so sure, with so many lactic acid junkies surrounding you, you may not stop the set for fear of looking 'weak'.
