President Reagan raised the debt ceiling the more times than any other President since 1960. He raised it 18 times, for a 67% increase.

Watch Bloomberg’s Hans Nichols breaks down the numbers that make up the debt ceiling and looks at how many times it has been raised through the years. He speaks on Bloomberg Television’s “Market Makers”:

President Obama “doesn’t even compare” to Reagan’s record, he has raised the debt ceiling 6 times, for a 31% increase.

Reagan was expanding our govt to create jobs.   he was also raising our military budget by 43%.

It was necessary at the time.   Did economists know that, 30 years later, this growth would suddenly come back to haunt us?  Sure.  They probably thought it'd happen sooner lol - technology skyrocketing led to crazy productivity, slowing down the inevitable.

Reagan was just like Bush 1, clinton, Bush 2, obama, and whoever the next guy/girl is.   Spend as much as you can, build bombs, grow govt, reduce rights, and play to the base.  Can't fault any of them - cause we always vote for them (or the other guy, just like them).

Actually Clinton shrunk government to 1950's levels.

Doesn't matter. Obama not only raised it but also created the biggest debt from Washington to Clinton in less than 51/2 years. But I suspect you wouldn't understand that.

After what Carter did and the threat of the Soveits...I'd say Reagan worked out pretty damm well. Unlike the current shitbag making a mockery out of the office. Keep backing your biy right to the bitter end.

Once again.....

http://blog.heritage.org/2013/09/26/morning-bell-43000-per-household/

Did you know that since President Obama came into office, the debt limit has been raised seven times?

With those increases, Congress has added $43,000 in debt for every American household in just the last four years.

And now the debt limit deadline is looming again. Treasury will run out of tricks to keep paying the bills on October 17, Secretary Jack Lew announced yesterday.

Instead of pursuing significant spending cuts and entitlement reforms that are desperately needed to get spending under control, House Republicans reportedly are proposing to suspend the debt ceiling for more than a year, which would add $1.1 trillion to the debt.

So, take that $43,000 per household that was added in the last four years and tack on another $8,800 per household.

What happened the last time Congress raised the debt ceiling? Did they accomplish any meaningful spending cuts before increasing the debt limit? In a word, no:

Congress and the President last suspended the debt ceiling from February 4, 2013, through May 18, 2013, adding $300 billion to the national debt in less than four months. Their only request was that the Senate produce a budget for the first time in four years, which it did. No savings were accomplished.

No savings.

This is unacceptable.

As Heritage’s Romina Boccia, the Grover M. Hermann Fellow in Federal Budgetary Affairs, wrote yesterday:

Congress should implement spending cuts and entitlement reforms before—or as part of—an increase in the debt ceiling. Lawmakers still have time to put forth a plan that puts the budget on a path to balance and avoids a debt crisis today and in the future. The clock is ticking.

Not so.

As of Obama's inauguration (January 20, 2009), the national debt stood at $10.6 trillion.  We will reach the current debt ceiling of $16.7 trillion by October 17, according to Treasury.  So during Obama's time in office, the debt grew by $6.1 trillion.   That's a lot, of course.  But it needs some perspective. By comparison, in his eight years in office, G. W. Bush increased it by $4.9 trillion.

Also keep in mind that the costs for the two wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, which Bush started and Obama is shutting down, continued to add to the debt with a total estimate for both wars at $1.49 trillion by the end of fiscal 2013 (coming up on September 30th).  Those wars were started by Bush, but their ongoing costs obviously contribute to the rise in debt under Obama.

Also, since the Fed stepped in, under Bernanke (appointed by Bush) to purchase assets under QE1 & 2, they will have purchased $2 trillion worth of Treasuries.   That $2 trillion is owed to ourselves.  So if you subtract that, the deficit under Obama has increased by $4.1 trillion, slightly less than Bush (granted it is over 5.5 years rather than eight).  So while in office, Obama increased the national debt by 38.7%.

In contrast, Ronald Reagan increased the national debt from $1 trillion to $2.7 trillion during his two terms in office, which is an increase of $1.7 trillion, or 170%.

It is really from Reagan on that the national debt increases hugely accelerated, under subsequent administrations, Republican and Democratic.
