What's your opinion on refurbished products?
« on: October 03, 2013, 06:10:02 PM »
You get them for a lower price and guarantee is the same as a new product. It is a good idea to buy a refurbished laptop or cellphone? Or should I pay a little more for a new one?

I just found out that some places only sell this kind of items thus their low prices, but those fuckers aren't telling you that those products aren't exactly new >:(

I think it all boils down to what you're getting. If the warranty is equivalent to that of a new product and the price is less then it's a no brainer. If the warranty isn't as good as that of a new product, the price is less and you're willing to potentially deal with some hassle, then you should probably go for it. Otherwise, I'd steer clear.

I've personally rarely found it prudent to save a few bucks in the short term only to potentially deal with trouble in the longer term. Your mileage may vary.

Not sure.

For fridges and washers buy scratch and dent models for a big discount from places like lowes and Home Depot.

I buy a lot of my stuff from liquidation outlets and pawn shops.  Got an almost brand new Acer Laptop with Windows 7 for 80 bucks.  I wouldn't buy a cell phone though because of diseases and shit since its on someone's ear plus its generally dropped a lot for most people.  Plus most items can be repaired and upgraded.

Right now, my main desktop computer I use for my business is a P4 Dell Dimension I got for 50 bucks from a company that went bankrupt ( happens all the time) about 4 years ago....still runs like a champ.  The key is to not put the latest software up all the time if you don't need it.

Even old computers can be salvaged.  Got an 8 year old IBM Netvista.  Instead of throwing it out, I just loaded it with a scaled down version of Ubuntu Linux and keep it in my exercise room so I can watch Hulu, Netflix, or listen to Pandora while I train.

If you don't need to spend the money....then why should you????

i like them a lot.  Often, I will contact a store and tell them I see this item for $x refurb, and they'll offer it new for the same price.

musical equipment, computers, etc.  I do like refurbs but since I learned to just ask, I've gotten a yes every time.

Because of the nature of my research and the kind of software I develop professionally, I mostly work on high-end cutting edge hardware. Most of my personal projects usually target relatively new hardware and software. Having to support 350MHz machines running Windows 2000 just doesn't appeal or make sense to me.

That's not to say that older machines are worthless. Depending on your usage model older hardware can work well. But I wouldn't run anything as old as an 8-year old NetVista myself. Even if the horsepower was enough, the extra amount of power that thing would suck down would almost cost enough to justify getting a newer, more efficient machine. Heck, I could get more performance than that out of an Atom machine that sips less power in a year than the NetVista does in a week.

It's in that sense that buying used old computers can be a false economy. It's a slightly different calculus if you already have the hardware, but still...

One thing I'd never get used or refurbished is hard drives and solid-state drives. My data is simply way too valuable.

A lemon is a lemon. I don't want something that's broken before I even buy it. So no, I don't buy refurbished products. On the other hand, I have bought several vehicles which were demos for a nice discount.

Yeah... I got a nice fridge for half-price from Lowe's because it had a small scuff mark on one side. The side is conveniently hidden by other cabinets, so win-win situation there.

The problem with demo cars is that they are more often than not heavily abused. Despite being used by salesmen to go get McDonalds (good luck getting the stench out!) they are driven quite hard.

I personally wouldn't buy a demo model, even if it's "technically" new (that is, never titled).

The car I've driven for almost ten years was from Enterprise Car Sales. It was less then a year old with 19,000 miles on it. It has been a great car with very few repairs. I saved around "7,000 off the sticker price of a brand new model.

I always walk by them in the center of the store and see a tiny scratch and a $500 discount and wonder what is wrong with people that they are buying other than these.

I buy refurbished refrigerators, washers,  dryers,  and oven/ranges for my buildings. I use a company called Refurbking. They are great. Mostly all LG products,  higher end for a portion of the MSRP. I purchase a 5 yrear parts and labor warranty for each one at $50. So far no issues at all.

The 8 year old Netvista is only serving the purpose to watching videos, TV shows and playing music in the exercise room....and my main desktop computer uses about the same power as other desktops nbut as I mentioned, I have an Acer Netbook that I use along with 2 Android Tablets whenever I'm not working at home and am on the road.

I think for me, because I've had my own home computer since I was 15, I'm not really dazzled anymore with newer computers...especially since I used to operate with a 1 meg 8 mhz Atari 1040STF....in fact, I could honestly still do 60% of all my work with an Atari ST

You always format your hard drives....never want to use someone else's shit with virus.  Usually people get rid of their computers because they run too slow and a fresh reboot solves 99 percent of the problems

When I decided to upgrade my desktop, I reformatted the hard drive on the old one in preparation for giving it away. It still ran slow because it was just that old.

No doubt there are deals to be had. But I would approach a demo car as a "used car" instead of new. Same with fleet cars – especially rentals. If you're careful you can get a good deal but it takes effort and careful inspection/walk around. Which I guess is good advice even if you're buying new.

When I bought my car and my wife's car from Enterprise they were selling them off with less then 20,000 miles on them and less then a year old. From what I understand, they are keeping them as rentals longer these days. When I go to replace my car, I may have to buy a new one. The last time I bought a brand new car was in the 1970's. I've been thinking about a Buick Encore.

As a general rule, no.... would not buy refurbished.

But there are always some exceptions... like maybe if it was a secondary phone, not my primary phone, sure.

But most of the time - eh, no.
