Sexism is a serious problem in software companies. Geeks are anxious at the best of times around women, put them in a environment where 95% of the employees are men, they will NOT miss an opportunity to denigrate their female colleagues. Trying to trip them up with technical talk, segueing off into lectures about irrelevant details, sly insinnuendos, all kinds of shit.
This poor girl was simply trying to fit in, in an industry were the vast majority of workers are male. She was reluctant to set boundaries in the bar (by saying: no, I will not do a "body" shot) because it would have set her apart.
It doesn't help that in developer conferences people get absolutely trashed, both sides of the pond.
