Norm Abram is the master, of course.  This guys patience and skill using the same basic tools that go back hundreds of years is really amazing though.  

You cannot buy a cabinet like this at Ikea...

What I like about it, is what you mentioned---the skill and patience. It harks back to a time where you had to make your furniture or hire someone to do it. It takes time, reminds of the 10,000 hrs suggestion. If you do something over the span of 10,000 hours, you will become a master at it...and this show has been on since 1979...33 yrs.

Roy Underhill is awesome. He's marvelously patient and thoughtful in his teaching. The companion books are well worth the cost too. The section on selecting and bucking trees down to usable lumber, and traditional joinery are particularly interesting.

Damn, that's a long time. I'm going to see if I can find any old episodes on youtube. I never would have thought people on getbig watched this too!!!

There's tons of good stuff on youtube but because my garage space is limited it's kind of like watching porn without jerking off.  I really want to lay down about 3000sf of slab and build a workshop.  Not that I have the skills to justify 3000sf of workspace but right now I have more skills and ambition than space, which is really frustrating.

here is something that may inspire you. This guy built his own lift for his daily driver/racecar Porsche 911. It is a one car garage/space, but he turned it into his workshop for his car.

The lift is pretty cool.  He's done well there.  I've got an I-beam gantry setup in mind for my fantasy space.  Not as sleek as a floor recessed hoist, and not ideal for automotive work, but it woud let me cover the whole area.

I have watched that guy a lot of times, he has that old style down and has made some seriously labor intensive stuff.
I also used to watch the new yankee workshop guy bit found he could get annoying as shit. He had a ton of modern equipment and would be spouting off about moving shit a 32nd of an inch, fuk that I can hit with my hand and get a 1/4.
