Would like some getbiggers advice.
« on: October 15, 2013, 03:02:59 AM »
Last 2 weeks or so I've been having some pretty intense lower back pains (particularly at night). Just real sharp pains, so much so my sleep has been compromised. I've been treating it with over the counter NSAIDs. Last night was leg night.. Leg presses.. Fine, no discomfort. Walking lunges.. Same thing.. Moved on to machine squat. Went down, and suddenly my lower back spasm / locked up on me causing me to fall to the floor.. Picked myself up however felt as though I was going to black out.. Blurry / double vision, headache, etc. went to sit in my car where the pain in my lower back got worse.. Called 000 (911 for Australians). Stayed the night in hospital where they gave me every possible pain drug in existence.. Morphine, Valium, tramadol, etc. pain subsided somewhat and allowed me to sleep a few hours.. Have any of you guys experienced severe lower back muscular strains? What worked well for you guys in regards to treatment? Sitting down is fine however getting up off my seat is torture.. How long can I expect to be out of the gym? I'd really like to hear your stories regarding lower back injuries in the gym.. Or just in general. Thanks in advance..

I have 2 herniated disks L4-L5 with L5 good for operation. Spent 3 days in the hospital as I could not even walk (1 year ago)

After this I started going to the gym regularily, ate clean, started yoga and the pains subsidized completely.

No x-rays at hospital? That should have been first thing done, to see if you have any real damage. If no damage, it could be stress related. Google Dr. John Sarno he is a expert in this field. I had back pain 6 years ago for about a year, got his book and learned what was causing it, I was fine as soon as I was done with it.

They didn't xray me which is what I find really weird.. I thought that would've been the first thing they would've done considering how much pain I was in.

Without knowing what it is you are suffering from, the very first port of call would be to use ice packs 24 to 48 hours after initial pain onset.  AFter that Heat Packs work wonders.  But judging by your pain levels, it may be something serious, best to get that checked out again.

I have intermittent lower back pain. Went to the doctor they mentioned an X-ray if it didn't clear up in the usual time frame but it did. I've had this problem on and off for 10 years but finally went to the doctor because I layed on the floor to stretch it and such but it made worse and hurt very bad and couldn't even get up for over an hour. First standing up and taking steps were brutal.

Mine goes away after a week or two and to treat it I take aleve and use heating pad and sometimes Ben gay cream. Heat pad works well. If you are carrying extra weight especially in the gut then lose some of that. Also I take some extra vitamin D when it flares up. Also when it does heal maybe get into a stretching routine, I need to do that but haven't yet.

As far as work they told me to take a day off and rest then go in the next day. Moving is painful but does help. Obviously more difficult if you have a stressful job. I have an office job with a lot of walking so it was ideal for me.

Yeah good luck and go push for an X-ray if you have a lot more problems. Low back pain sucks.

I go light on stuff like leg press and lower back movements like stiff leg dead lifts etc.

Depends on your diagnosis.  I was out for about 6 months.  I could barely sit or stand.  It was pretty bad.  Pain meds didn't do a thing.  Some of the lying down yoga exercises are great for aligning your back.  Don't be a hero and rush to the gym though.  Also hows your fat levels?  if you have a bit of a pooch belly lose that weight, it strains your back.

Similar story to mine. Back went out on the leg-press. Now it's two years ago and my back never became normal again. But I can train, and function without major problems. But I have always some degree of pain in certain positions.

You should watch out for nerve damage- if you get paralysis of the lower body, and if you get problems with bladder control- it's operation time- get to the hospital at once!

Woke up this morning feeling much better than last night.. Dnt kno if this is because of pain meds.. At work today as well. Thinking ill lay off the weights this week and resume next week.. Will a little bit of cardio tonight on the treadmill (low intensity) help things out a little? Thanks for the responses.
