I know you weren't asking me, but Kauai is great. Girlfriend's family has a timeshare there, we went two or three years ago. Less developed than Oahu, as you'd probably expect, but that's what I like about it. A lot less crowded and busy. Beautiful, of course, goes without saying. Incredibly green. They filmed much of Jurassic Park there.

Downside: wild fucking roosters everywhere. They won't let you sleep in.

Moreso country than Honolulu, yes, but there are still hotels, restaurants, and bars nearby. At the timeshare, of course, it was mostly vacationing mainlanders and retirees, but get in the car and you'll see plenty of locals, too. It was mixed.
