Profiling is just being smart.  If a segment of the population is commiting a massively disproportinate nber of crimes, that is who you watch more carefully. 

But this isn't just about watching, which on some level we'd be partially ok with. They acted on a profile, which is the point when that shit is corrupt.

you are making an assumption that he is "low income"...could have a rich parent, family member...
Your assumption is just as bad as the detectives making their statements. And it was paid for with a valid credit card...
Now as far as him getting into trouble with his credit for purchasing 300 dollar belts, that is another thing.

"The credit card was actually fake, but that's not the point, Christian said.  The real issue is that I was targeted based on the color of my skin.  Sure, I had a phony card made from a stolen number that I bought on the internet, but they didn't know that.  It's racist!"

Barney's has cause to question large purchases that seem suspicious. A young kid (not sure how he was dressed), buying only a belt, with a credit card, what time of day was this was not sure, seems like the store has cause to raise suspicion.

No lawsuit against the police with state immunity unless they can prove it wasn't in good faith and reasonable.

Tough luck for the kid. However, you never know the whole facts of a situation though. I mean when a reporter's name is "Ginger" you know the story is going to be slanted. Maybe this kid was giving off that young punk attitude so prevalent today and raised even more red flags.

I agree with your state 99%...However there is a 1% chance that the store detectives throw something else in the kids bag and make it look like he stole it...The kid did the right thing and hopefully some people lose their jobs and the kid gets some dough out of the situation...
