Set in a medium sized midwest town right after WWII, the story is narrated by and from the viewpoint of the neighbor of a displaced refugee couple that had managed to immigrate to the US from Europe right after the end of WWII, having lost their home and everything they owned and had worked for. The husband wanted to get a fresh start and rebuild what he had lost in the war and he thought the US was just the place to do it.
Each week the neighbor relates his interactions with the couple and describes the couple's adventures trying to assimilate and become part of the community.
