The supplement industry is the only thing keeping bodybuilding afloat.  Endorsements from large mainstream companies like Pepsi or Nike will never be given to a bodybuilder.  Bodybuilding is to closely associated with drugs and any reputable company wouldn't get within a thousand miles of a bodybuilding competition.

those guys are on everything. Dont forget barry bonds and baseball.
I guess the owners in the supplement industry are former bodybuilders/promoters. Is that one of the reasons why supp industry supports bodybuilding?

Yes true.....however the difference is the NFL/MLB draws millions of fans and billions of dollars annually.....at the end of the day bodybuilding draws a small crowd  and makes NO MONEY.....

If it did, Pepsi or Coke or whomever would be in the game.....

where did it start?

well, like any other business... there was a 'need' or a market, and somebody identified that market/need, and filled it.

that..... and quite a few steroid dealers who got out of the business in the 80's and moved into essentially the same business, just with larger volume, and without the risk of going to jail.

The biggest players in the industry go for bodybuilders as the face of their company  they could make a lot of more $$ if they got a hollywood actor or a football player to endorse their products. This could also lead to a wider acceptance of the products IMO

Like it has been said millions of times, to make it in NFL/MLB etc you need to have A LOT of talent ....in bodybuilding you just need to have the right dealer and not give a damn about side effects and BOOM youre on stage with pro card and all ...

Mainstream watch the MR.O for 5 mins and is like "who you think is on more drugs? "

there's not  Sport/competition in a BB show ...its a matter of opinion based on who do you think looks better in a thong. (Or freakier) for that matter.....

Do you think Pepsi,Coke,Nikey etc.....want any part on such Sport??

Again, professional football/baseball players, and Hollywood stars don't need the distraction (aka  "linked to PEDs)

The supplement industry has to be the biggest legal scam on the planet… With the exception of pro-hormones; all supplements are almost completely worthless and a total waste of money…

The “snake oil salesmen” of these products are very clever marketers/entrepreneurs indeed, and have mastered the art of persuading the ignorant and uninformed… Using persuasive, enticing, and over-inflated advertising, they have succeeded in convincing the masses to spend their money as a means to achieve an impossible dream…

Being so subjective that it is, there is no way to definitively prove or disprove the efficacy of these products, therefore the manufacturers and peddlers easily get away with never having to back up their claims…

For naturals, specific training applications are most important, then nutrition… For those who take enhancements, drugs are most important, training second, then nutrition… Hope this helps…

Weider and other mags never made much, sold Barbell Sets but you buy one you only need one. So they had no recurring sales from the same people. Once they realised Protein supplements would work, they pumped them hard. That's when it started, 50's or so.

Commercially available supplements started around the 1930's however they've been around since ancient times starting in Egypt.

This is true, equipment sales account for a bit, especially in the old days when the sport was first starting out, but most of those things are durable goods, and can be bought and resold dozens of times. Supplements were and are really what drives the whole industry, and it's been that way since at least the 1950's as mentioned. In fact many times the magazines were loss leaders, but kept around because of the advertising they provided for the companies sister products, this was true for York Barbell for a few years.

I have a dream, that one day, each individual on planet earth, will eat one meal of his day from a box containing food in powdered form. That day, schmoes will be the most respected athletes.

It's because humans are too lazy to eat right and work hard so they believe the bullshit ads that make it sound like they can achieve a goal with doing almost nothing but buying the magical product.
