I've worked for General Motors since 1985. In the late 80's GM started installing more and more robots. The big issue with a robot was if it went down it could be hours of lost production. If a person would go down they could immediately put another person on that operation with little or no down time. Lessons learned, many of those robots were removed.

Robotics was just starting out back then...When the robots can repair the robots, that's when things will really start moving...

How many jobs would be created if the Hierarchy decided to ramp up their earthquake machine on a very large city/state? They could wipe out a small percentage of people all the while creating a shit load of jobs that robots won't be able to do right now.

the local news just said, that 50% of ALL jobs, will be LOST (done by robots, computers, etc) in 10 years

 what say you all?

50% of all people don't do a damn thing anyway.  Why wait ten years?  I can sell you a robot right now that can do that.

Mechanization or automation is a better word.  'Robot' connotes, to a lot of people anyway, an autonomous machine operating without the need for human guidance.  That will never happen.  AI will never happen imo, if that's what they're telling you to fear.

I'm amazed computers haven't replaced accountants, bookkeepers, and general bean counters already though.  Given the right program it's little more than a question of data entry.  Yet they behave as if it's some black art and tell you they bill $400/hr.  ::)  So fuck 'em.

This is true. But, GM installed the latest/greatest robots in our glass cells in July and hardly a day goes by without these robots breaking down. For two months we would run 10 hour shifts just to make 8 hours production.

I think everyone should keep an open mind when it comes to robotics and AI because even if the predictions are sometimes overly optimistic big things are still going to happen. It's hard to do anything or prepare for the future because it's not here yet but I think we could try to soften the impact.

We've been hearing predictions for strong AI since the 1960's?

The singularity freaks aside, barring some major breakthroughs in computer science and neuroscience I don't think it is coming anytime soon.

automatic carwashes
self-checkout at grocery stores
kuerig k-cup coffee makers
flowbe vacuum haircutters
iRobot vacuum cleaners
Fleshlights
Sawzall dildo's

aside from the self-checkout, I don't think any of these things are an improvement over the 'real thing'..

what else is there?
combines for harvesting grain/corn or whatever
tracktors pulling plows instead of ox
mechanical 'tree shakers' for harvesting fruit
