Who pays for this?
If he doesn't have insurance, does the hospital pass the cost off onto other paying customers some how?
Do you know for a fact he is uninsured? In the case of the uninsured, the hospitals and doctors definitely and indirectly pass the costs on to those of us who pay through the nose for health insurance. And there are a whole raft of people who get medical care and who cannot afford it and don't pay for it. This is one of the reasons behind changing the healthcare insurance system in this country. If everyone paid into it, the costs and risk would be spread over a greater number of people and hypothetically would then be reduced. That is the upside of Obamacare.
When I saw the bill for my prostatectomy, it was $30,000. I was in the hospital for three days total. My co-pay with insurance was $300. Because the hospital and the doctors have a contract with my health insurance provider, they accepted $10,000 as payment in full. Someone off the street with no insurance and assets would have paid the full $30,000. People with no insurance and no assets, pay nothing. Yet we all get the same medical care. Crazy isn't it?
