Never could cop to the guy's genius. His playing just does not do anything for me. But his influence has my respect, regardless.

Not being a real guitar guy, can someone tell me if Eddie Van Halen is up there on that list.

Hendrix was great at what he did. In my opinion, he wasn't a very versatile player and that is why I wouldn't rate him as the greatest.  I feel the same way about Eddie Van Halen. This is only my subjective criteria.

I started playing guitar at 8 years old in 1965. at 10 years old my Father took me to the Cherry Hill NJ music fair in a tent in the summer of 1967. On the bill was Cream and Jimi Hendrix and other people who don't seem to matter anymore. Cream was great because I was a 10 year old white boy blues man. Then Jimi came out and changed my life. He was not only an incredible guitar player but an amazing showman. My Father said to me after the show " who was that idiot?" I told him "he is the future Pop." I saved all my money from my paper route and bought a brand new Stratocaster for $175 with a case. I just gave it to my Grandson. Ken

Jimi Hendrix was the king.  His playing sounded like it was from outer space.  Purple Haze is the song that really got me into him as a kid but later on I discovered recordings from the New Years Eve/New Years Day shows of 1969/70, that's when my brain and ears really got melted.  Some of that stuff ended up of the Band of Gypsys album but you gotta find the tracks from all 4 shows.  Live at the Fillmore East.  Nothing better that that for me.

I listened to Machine Gun every day in college while tripping on Window Pane. The Buddy Miles parts freaked me out though.

For all Hendrix flair he was pretty much a traditional blues guitarist.  I'm not saying th man couldn't play , he definitely could, but I doubt he would have evolved much stylistically and expanded his repertoire if he had lived.  This is only my opinion and considering he died before he had the chance, we will never know.

Yeah, people evolve in their art over the decades...Hell how old was Paul Mcartney when he composed his first symphony years ago? I bet people way back in the sixties would not have expected that...It was not well received by critics but it was a huge accomplishment...Jimi died way too young and we were robbed of what could have been...
