to be fair, being considered a genius is more about mathematical problem solving than spelling. With that said at one time Kanye's music was good and he deserved some recognition.  It wasn't great, but just good.

This is no longer the case and hasn't been for a while...also once his mom died I truly believe that he went officially insane.

Marketing has always played a big role in pop music, but at least there has a time in which (most)pop stars were good musicians too. IMO Michael Jackson's solo career marked the turning point of marketing over musicianship. Madonna is the epitome of successful marketing. But when it comes to giving a solid live performance there are two guys who can entertain a huge and diverse crowd for hours and all they need is a mic and guitar. Those two guys are Springsteen and Prince even though hardly anyone remembers when they had their last commercial success.

Pretty much every current pop star is the result of great marketing and genius producers. Nowadays even dj's are considered creative talent. lol
