If this is not related to abusing AAS, then I feel sorry for him. However, if this is the result of pumping drugs into his system, no sympathy here.

Pretty tragic actually. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe he went in for a minor surgery and the surgeon "nicked" something that resulted in him being paralyzed.

Made me sick to my stomach when I first read the story. Could happen to anyone.

A second open heart surgery is certainly not minor. He had a re-operation on a repaired aortic dissection to fix/replace a stent within the aorta. The most feared and rare complication associated with the repair of extensive aneurysms involving the thoracic and abdominal aorta (thoracoabdominal aneurysm) is paraplegia, paralysis of both lower extremities and generally the lower trunk. If the blood supply to the spinal cord is not identified prior to surgery the patient is at higher risk.

He could have bled out after his first aortic dissection and survived it and the surgery (and competed again).  The re-op led to the paralysis.

He's a fighter!
