That's sticking point, many times you might get your wallet back, but it will be stripped of most things, minus ID. I've found a lot of people to be less than honest about paper money, some of the sleazy ones will take credit cards, but many will return the wallet and ID, if it isn't much hassle.

Here in the States, you can drop the wallet into a Post box, and they'll return it, and that's how a lot are I suppose. This old article seems to confirm it -

years ago, 18yrs to be exact, went to the beach while on vacation, somewhere in central florida....later on that day, on my way to the grocery store, I realized my wallet was missing....tried to retrace a series of events in my head to see where I remember having it last in my back pocket....it seems that in the parking lot at that beach, I switched pants....had on a pair of levy's jean which had my wallet and it fell in the lot without realizing it.....later that week, I received a package with no returned address and I suspect it had to be my wallet...sure enough it was....all my $126 and 65 cents were there and my debit and other important stuff were there.......If Only I knew who returned it, I would buy them lunch for a week....lol....that's just a rare case....I'm sure there are guardian angels....

Lost my wallet, dropped it in the middle of a mall parking lot during heavy rain storm. Drove home about 50 miles when I got there was a message on my answering machine from a girl who found it.  Had over $200 in cash all was there gave her $50 when I picked it up.
