 Shocked

Quote
Yankees to sign Brian McCann to five-year, $85M deal

The Yankees are in agreement on a five-year, $85 million contract to sign free agent catcher Brian McCann, according to multiple reports, including CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman. There's also a vesting option for a sixth year, that would make the contract worth $100 million.

This deal is the largest average annual value contract ever given to a free agent catcher (Joe Mauer's contract was an extension to stay put). McCann has also been given a full no-trade clause, per Heyman.

McCann, 29, hit .256/.336/.461 with 13 doubles, 20 homers and 57 RBI in just 102 games last season. He was an All-Star for the seventh time of his career. Worth mention here is McCann's a left-handed hitter and Yankee Stadium is very homer-friendly to lefties Turner Field suppresses homers a bit, too, so McCann's power should see a slight uptick with the move -- even if it's somewhat mitigated by moving to the vaunted AL East.

The Yankees have a highly-touted catching prospect in Gary Sanchez, though the 20 year old is still a few years away and it's possible McCann could move to designated hitter or first base (Mark Teixeira has three years left on his deal) in the last several years of this contract.

The Yankees, Rangers, Angels and Red Sox (to a lesser degree) have all been reportedly involved in talks with McCann.

Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News was first to report things were close between McCann and the Yankees Saturday.

being a catcher pays, tools of ignorance my ass. imagine what the yanks would have paid for yadier molina. years ago casey stengel when he was manager of the yanks used to say we'll do alright as long as we have our man in the line-up. he meant yogi berra......

Great move by NY - a massive weakness was just turned into a strength.

Get Cano and Tanaka signed now......

Well, Cano is still the top target, but they're not going to wait around to make their moves.  I'm iffy on Beltran, just due to age/injury history, but 2 years should be good.

I also want them all in on Tanaka.

That's the problem with having a new agent who is trying to make a name with their first big client.

Yanks won't go that high, and neither will anyone else.

I get you that on the surface it looks really bad.

Hughes was awful last year.  But, he was crushed by the Home Run, and now he's moving to Target field, which was 4th best in the majors last year at limiting them.   That, combined with the fact that he's still only 27, means that if he can revert to the pitcher he was one year ago, the price is fine for 190 innings / year of league average pitching.

A guy who's won 18 and 16 games and is still 27 /w mid 90's stuff, he was going to get paid. I'm glad he's gone. Thankfully Jaba is also no longer under contract.

he could be on a saberhagan like pace one year good next year bad. 2010= 18-8  w 4.19 era. 2011= 5-5 w  5.79 era 2012= 16-13 w  4.23 era. 2013=4-14 w  5.19 era.[ reggie jackson 563 home runs never hit 30 in back to back years].

Ridiculous money.  Big loss for NY, but glad they didn't cave in.  Fuck him.

Once I saw 10 yr's it was only a matter of time. Both parties had very good reasons for parting ways. Can't believe it.  Sad

Man, this really f'ing sucks.

Kuroda officially back for 1 yr.
Quote
The Yankees and Kuroda finalized a one-year contract on Thursday night, reports Joel Sherman of the New York Post. He will earn $16 million with another $500,000 available in innings pitched based incentives.

Cano is an enormous loss, but he wanted top $$ over everything else.  Rivera is a huge hurt, on the field, and emotionally.

But, in addition to Beltran/McCann/Ellsbury, they also should improve with Tiexiera/Jeter/Pineda, possibly a healthy ARod and a full year of Soriano.

One more decent arm and they're in it.

It is imperative they resign Boone Logan.
