Guys Who Looked Better Smaller
« on: January 04, 2006, 04:41:34 PM »
The post on George Farah made me think of this...

What bodybuilders do you think looked better at a lighter weight?

I'll go first... Dennis James. When Dennis turned pro he had much better lines. He's packed on a ton of mass, but I think its at the expense of those lines. The judges keep sending out the message that bigger is better.

I would say almost 90% of all bodybuilders go beyond their ideal bodyweights , most look much better a tad smaller and they look a lot sharper.

I agree with ND.  Almost everyone, including Coleman, who was at his best in '98-00 at 250-260.

Perfect example Nasser El Sonbaty look at him when he was light he waist & hips were outight tiny and he was probably 250lbs look at the B&W pic his midsection is a travesty when compared to a lighter version and his overall look is more pleasing .

Nasser started winning and placing higher in 95 (once he got heavier) He gained maybe 10-15 pounds that year. The pic where hes lighter is from 94.  I think he looks alot better at the heavier bodyweight.  He looked a little flat in the torso when he was lighter.

I don't think anyone has ever had better triceps than Levrone did at the 92 NOC.

Hmmmm......I'd say

1 - Ronnie Coleman: To me, he looked his best around 1995-1996.

2 - Greg Kovacs: He looked his best 10 years ago, when he won the Canadian Nationals and turned pro. Since then, the hype to have him come into contest shape at a heavier bodyweight has been his downfall. Kovacs needs size about as much as Shaquille O'Neal needs elevator shoes.

3 - Art Atwood: The way he looked when he won his first pro show in 2002 was great. But, as he's blimped up, he struggled. He reminds me of what Ken Waller said about Mike Katz in Pumping Iron:

"His arms aren't big enough to match his chest; his thighs are too big for his calves. You know; he hits one pose. And from that, he looks like a big spider."

If we're going to add NPC amateurs to the list, the most obvious candidate BY FAR has to be Dave Palumbo.

Palumbo has never been the most aesthetic guy in the world. But, he used to look somewhat decent a decade ago. I believe it was around the time he won the heavyweight class at the Jr. Nationals (he was even endorsed by AST; I remember he was on the company's ads for AST's MRP; MY-T-Pro 40, I think that's the name of it).

Now, his physique looks awful. He reminds me of Bizarro. And, he may have ruined his skin condition beyond repair.

i disagree about nasser. i think 1996/1997 was his prime.

but for the list: cutler, DJ, levrone, ronnie, flex, ruhl, fux, the list goes on. i believe there are VERY few bodybuilders who wouldn't do best to top out in the 245-250 range. nasser and dillet being exceptions, with jay's best being around 260.
