Finasteride, Does it work? And How?
From a sheer pharmacological & cosmetic standpoint, yes, it does work.
How?
In a nutshell (layman's terms)...
Finasteride works by inhibiting a nasty enzyme (5α-reductase) that exists throughout your body at various sites (the top of your scalp being one of those sites).
5α-reductase takes your body's free flowing testosterone and converts it to an even stronger androgenic substance known as dihydrotestosterone.
That androgen (dihydrotestosterone) has drastic effects on the scalp's hair follicles particularly of those who are predispositioned to suffer from hair loss.
Simply put, when testosterone reaches your scalp and is greeted by 5α-reductase, it is then turned into its obnoxious cousin (dihydrotestosterone), which has a problem with hair producing follicles (he is a bully and won't stop until each one of the hairs on the top of your scalp is murdered).
In order:
Free Testosterone-->greeted by 5α-reductase-->turns into dihydrotestosterone-->dihydrotestosterone is a scalp hair murderer.
Finasteride inhibits 5α-reductase, which in turn allows you to retain more hair.
my fucking hair is leaving me. Can Fina save me before its too late?
It will help to keep what hair you have alive, but it is not a magic bullet. In other words, it will not inhibit all 5α-reductase (There are 3 types of 5α-reductase and Finasteride targets 2 out of 3) so over time your hair loss will progress, albeit at a slower rate.
Oh and let me not forget to tell you that one of the side effects is sexual dysfunction.
Happy sprouting!
