So he asked the guy showing him to his room to shine his shoes.  He didn't know he couldn't ask him that. Yes, hotels back then always had shoe shiners. People didn't wear clown basketball shoes back then. The guy gives him attitude sitting on his couch in his hotel room and rolls a cigarette?  I would have clocked him too.

I called down to the front desk one time at a hotel and said I had dirty clothes. They sent a person to my room to pick it up and returned the stuff dry cleaned and pressed. Of course for a fee. Every decent hotel has a clothes cleaning service. Back then they also had a shoe cleaning and shining service. Hell, Harrah's casino still has shoe shiners. I'm I racist because a Hispanic woman came to my hotel room door pick up my clothes?

Just remember that people are followers. While everyone likes to think that they think for themselves and have their own beliefs, it just isn't true. Many are not "racist", because its not accepted now, but go to the 1950's and the N word would be dropped constantly is most households, by everyone from housewives to teenagers  Many anti racist liberals who denounce the dreaded N word, will go to some Thai or viet vacation and readily ride in a rickshaw pulled by a human beast of burden.

Empiracal studies have been done where people will conform to whatever the group thinks. Look at the Stanley Milgram studies that tried to explain how so many in Nazi Germany kept torturing and doing unspeakable acts to prisoners "under orders". The Milgram study made people believe that they were giving an electric shock to test volunteers when they got a wrong answer to a test question. The more wrong answers, greater the shock. The fake test always had the actor get the answer wrong, and in the group control setting, nearly 70% kept giving increasing shocks, even when the actor pretended to scream in pain. About 5% were willing to go to death. Because it was accepted by the group.

So in turn of the century New York, expecting a black servant to shine your shoes was WIDELY accepted and expected. It was not right, I'm not justifying it, but be careful in saying how you would be the lone renegade with your own beliefs if you grew up in that culture.

It was a different time. Leave it at that. It doesn't mean Sandow was a miserable person. He was misguided like most of society usually is.

Interesting take here.

You're comparing the late 1890s/ early 1900s to present day.

There is no question Sandow was a racist, the mindset was indoctrinated in people of that era. Blacks, asians, Hispanics, among others, weren't considered equals to whites. It was the accepted mindset for the time.  Also dont forget women weren't considered as a mans equal either.

As far as comparing your two stories you should have also held the maid outside your hotel window by her waist and collar just to see what the reaction would be by the general public, hotel and local authorities.

You'd be kicked out of the hotel and arrested. Sandow was not.

If you were higher than the 4th floor your window wont open fully to allow a person to fit through it, in Sandows time this wasnt the case. Because times change.

Yes and I'm sure a disparaging remark about whites or Asians is ever uttered in black households.

Funny that all the black bodybuilders of today aspire to have a statue of this man! Haha.

I have read Eugene Sandow's book "Strength and how to Obtain it" recently, I was delighted when I read a section of the book which was highly racist. Sandow talks about his first hour in the USA and his encounter with a black bell boy at a Hotel. It ended with Sandow holding the black boy dangling over the balcony at the 16th floor.

Note everytime it says guy in the text is where getbig changes the N-word automatically to guy, so Sandow used the N-word in one of his books haha.

CHAPTER VI r.
MY FIRST HOUR IN AMERICA.

First experiences are occasionally curious. You shall hear
mine.

Although the day we reached New York was the hottest
that had ever been known in that great country of w^onder-
ful records, no heat, however extreme, could detract from
the glories of New York Harbour, certainly the finest
harbour I have ever seen. Numerous people, including, of
course, the ubiquitous newspaper men, came on board to
welcome me, bands were playing, and there was a gay and
busy time generally.

Having landed, I entered a cab. Everyone, I suppose,
has a vivid recollection of his first cab in America. The
independence of the American cab-driver is sublime. It is
something too great for words. You can only draw a long
breath — and admire it. The particular journey which I was
undertaking would have been in England something con-
siderably less than a shilling fare. Hoping to be generous
I proffered the driver an equivalent in English money to two
shillings. To my surprise he said, **I guess. Colonel, that's
for myself ; your fare is four dollars," just eight times as
much as I had offered. Of course, I could not argue with
the man. He knew better than I, and there was nothing
for it but to pay promptly what he demanded. Moreover,
in America, it must be remembered, they charge, not for the
drive, but for the cab.

Mr. Abbey, who met me on the boat, accompanied in e to
the hotel at which I was to stay. At the office his attention
was called away for a moment, and I was left to the tender

124 STRENGTH :

mercies of the bell boy, a ni gger, who was asked to show me
the rooms.

" Come along, sir," the boy drawled. And along I went,
making my first acquaintance with an American elevator, in
which we were shot up heavenwards.

" How high are we ? " I asked, as we got out.

" Oh, this is the sixteenth floor," replied the boy, in an off-
hand manner, " you can see if you look down." I did look
down. By Jove, the depth down that staircase was tremen-
\ dous.
'\ Having selected my apartments, the boy coolly stood
beside me in my own room rolling a cigarette and lighting
it in my presence. This action seemed a little impudent,
■ but it was nothing to that which was to come. Remarking
that I desired to wash, I also asked the boy if he would
clean my boots.

" Clean your boots," he exclaimed, in blank astonishment,
" we don't do that in America, we (speaking of course for
himself and the n iggers like him) don*t clean boots here."

" Who then," I asked, " does clean them ? "

" Oh, you must go down stairs for that." And with these
words he reclined on my sofa, rolled another cigarette, and
calmly smiled at me.

This was really too much for white flesh and blood to bear.
I said to him sharply, '* Look here, young man. I may be a
stranger in this country and ignorant of some of its ways,
but 1 know enough of Americans to be quite sure that it is
not right for you to conduct yourself in this way. If you
don't promptly clear oft' I will report you ? "

But the boy was not easily to be moved. Instead of
taking himself off he squared up and wanted to fight me.
So I just took hold of that boy, and, testing his jacket and
trousers to be sure that they would bear the strain, I swung
him over the sixteenth floor staircase. And there for a few
moments I held him, just to give him a view of the depth,
which was so tremendous.

My word, didn't that boy shout and scream. I assured
him that he was quit€ safe in my hand so long as it was
closed, but if he ever attempted his impertinences again I
would bring him to the same spot and open it. And

AND HOW TO OBTAIN IT. 125

I reminded him that a drop through sixteen floors would not
be good even for n igger boys who smoked cigarettes in
private rooms and affected to be indignant at the suggestion
that they should clean a visitor's boots.

The boy's cries drew a small crowd, including my guest
and pianist, Martinus Sieveking, and the manager of the
hotel. The manager fully agreed with the warning I gave
the boy, and was profuse in his apologies, saying that such
conduct from a bell boy was unprecedented.

There is actually nothing racist about it. &guy was a common term used around that time and bell boys whether white or black are suppose to attend to a visitors needs especially cleaning boots as most roads were still dirt.  Unusual behavior especially since it's a great opportunity to get a tip so not sure if it was true or embellished...likely embellished

Since this came up, thought I'd add some extra input

In households? Just go to a predominantly black neighborhood, and politely ask to see a manager when a black worker got your order completely wrong at Mcdonalds and refuses to fix it.  You'll be called "White punk, white bitch."..."Cracka" and probably told to wait outside for a physical assault based in your skin color.

That would never happen to me as I would never be in a predominantly black neighborhood to start with.

Dead serious...in fact you learn a lot from just listening wealthy people along with a nice tip.  When I was a kid, worked a little bit at a golf course fetching balls, towels, water, etc.  Dollar could buy a lot back in the 80s.  But the knowledge gained was even more valuable.   You can be a bag boy one day and grow up buying a golf course

I was referring to the part where you said there was nothing racist about the interaction.

That said what golf course did you end up buying, is it in Texas?

Oh ok....Its a metaphor...but I did have some land in Texas but I'm about to buy some new property in New Mexico that just opened up.   In 10 years I can sell it as it will be developed for housing
