For the uneducated, a memorial service can and is much like a wake.  If you've never been to a wake, they can range to being subdued and reverent, to everyone getting shitfaced drunk, dancing like lunatics and passing out in the cold caress of their own vomit. Both are celebrations of the individuals life and what they did, they really aren't all sad and mopy.
