Bullshit.  Serial killers are off the radar.  DBA works fine when you have suspects to compare against.  Serial killers are just people that are complete strangers to the victims with no connection to link them.  Gather the DNA and do what with it?

As I said, victims of serial killers can appear like random murders or are attributed to other activities like drugs and prostituion.   Serial killers will target people that society doesn't pay much attention to.  As you said, the victims aren't directly tied to the perpetrator and that makes it much more difficult.

I forgot the percentage but it was somethign like 80 or 90% of murders happen by someone the victim knew.  Serial killers never killed people they knew.  If anything they came off as normal everyday people, friendly to their neighbors giving a friendly wave and smile at passerbys when mowing the lawn while they hung their victims upside down in the basement to drain them of their blood. The better ones would even travel across country making it harder to track.  People think, well today it's easier to track with all of the technology.  Not true at all.  I did a 2 year contract with the FBI and you'd be surprised how many states don't have their databases linked between them and the federal database.  Most have no clue that the person they just pulled over for running a red is wanted in 10 states for murder.

I may have missed it, but I dont believe that the "Unabomber" has been mentioned yet.

Mid-90's. He was a new-school serial killer. I guess he is kinda old-school too because he would write letters and make threats through the media.

He was turned in by a family member.

What about the serial killers that never get caught?  I bet there are a few out there who rival any previously mentioned.

What about the D.C. sniper ? :o  People got sniped mowing the lawn and getting gas.

He was an attention whore though. Thats what ultimately catches most of them. They have to leave clues, or they get sloppy.

The smart ones are still killing to this day.

he only killed 3 because he got caught early (thank God)

only got caught because a letter of his was posted in the newspaper, and a family member recognized the wording.

Up to that point, the FBI had no idea who the Unabomber was. And he was threatening to blow up LAX airport!

The whole pdf from Radford makes for some fine macabre reading -

http://maamodt.asp.radford.edu/Serial%20Killer%20Information%20Center/Serial%20Killer%20Statistics.pdf .

Also the breakdowns of some famous ones -

http://skdb.fgcu.edu/public/infamous%20list%20of%20serial%20killers.asp .

it seems that as far as SK are concerned South Dakota, Wyoming and Hawaii are the safest places to stay

Charles Manson isn't a serial killer or even a mass murderer. In fact I don't think he actually killed anybody.

In the 70's and 80's serial killers were all the rage.  People made famous by killing many others, but not in one big mass shooting but one at a time over years until finally being caught.  I've noticed though in the 2000's that we haven't had any.  Lots of mass murders, but no Ted Bundys or John Wayne Gacies anymore.  They used to even give them awesome nicknames.  Boston Strangler, Zodiac Killer, BTK, Son of Sam and my favorite, The Cleveland Torso Murderer.  You would think with the "Look at me" generation that there'd be more of these type of guys but there isn't.

Your favorite:  The Cleveland Torso Murderer -- LOL! :D

I'm sure there are still serial killers lurking about, but to really garner attention these days, killing folks piecemeal isn't enough to grab the headlines.  Instead, mass killers have to run into schools and other undefended areas and start bombing or shooting the place up.  Those fuck-ups KNOW they'll go down in history, plus they get immediate gratification through the media -- something the serial killers from decades past didn't really have.  Moreover, since we have a lot more media these days with the Internet, the effect is magnified.  If someone didn't read the newspaper much or watch TV in the 70s, it's conceivable they wouldn't really know who the Zodiac Killer was.  Fast-forward back to today, and I bet even the dumbest guy you could find would know about those Columbine kids.

On the dungeon basement wall.  ;D

Yes it does.  I find the part about average IQs very interesting.  The public believes most serial killers are high IQ Hannibal Lecter types but they aren't.

When talking about "serial killers" most people think of or are referring to those that go around murdering numerous random strangers without any rational motive, whereas anyone who simply killed more than one person is included in those radford uni figures.

So those figs are probably not that relevant when looking at race, IQ etc if you are talking about the more high profile killers that most people associate with "serial killer" as those types will only make up a minute % of those figs.

The reason the study was conducted was to clarify the issue.  Serial murders have variety of motives, not all are sexual sadists or motivated by rage like the media portrays in films and on television.  All have a rationale for their killing.

You're just trying to move the goal post in order to reclaim the myth of the white serial killer.   You're attempting to cavalierly wave off the data.  Facts don't lie and I'm tired of intellectually dishonest individuals like yourself changing the rules when you don't like the results.

One of the problems facing law enforcement is the stereotype of the white serial killer.  So many people believe it, investigations have been ruined and side tracked looking for the wrong guy.

They work for the Iluminati on a contract basis. Pays better.  Investigations get smoke screened. Etc.
