There are advances on the supply side like deep water drilling and unconventional oil in the form of tight oil shales, oil sands, and heavy oil.

However there are also advances on the consumption side like hybrids, plug in hybrids, and electric cars.

The CEO of Exxon said twenty years ago people would not have been able to predict the advances in finding and extracting oil that we've seen in the last twenty years.
