I posted an article on this last week or so...about how buying stuff makes us happy, but then the feeling goes away and then we buy more stuff, to keep the high. But, ultimately, having the material goods, never "makes" us happy...

http://lifehacker.com/why-were-so-materialistic-even-though-it-doesnt-make-1486081424

Good article, thanks. I like how they explained the difference between 'need' and 'want'.

I would never say having new or nice things is bad. But desires really are the root of all suffering.

In coaches case, I remember him posting about the truck he wanted. Then he gets the truck. Now he's posting about the truck he wants..lol, like I said its an endless cycle.

I said I loved the truck I have and it was the best vehicle I have even bought. I liked the Atlas, it doesn't go on sale until..........2015 ::)

KH300, I do understand where you are coming from. We should be grateful for what we have. Possessions isn't the key to happiness.

I had a brand new work vehicle at my house that my job replaced new every 3 years. My wife had a decent car but I drove a 17 year old Toyota Tercel. I couldn't get rid of it because every time I turned on the key it worked. My job was buying a new Durango for my use so I never felt the need to have a new car. When I retired I wanted a new sports car of some kind but ran into some minor financial problems. I ended up buying a new and you can laugh, a 6 speed manual Camry. It's sure is nice to have a new truck though. I will drive that Camry till it dies. Judging by how I take care of cars that could be 20 years from now.

My previous vehicle was a 2004 Durango which I loved as well. It blew an engine, has 172k miles on it, bought it used with 19K miles. Having the engine rebuilt and giving it to my son.

Why the fuck are you worried what Coach does with his money? You a liberal who wants everyone to drive a Prius? You a liberal who can't stand successful people? You a liberal who wants to spend other people's money?

Or are you just a jealous, cheap prick?

Fuck you and your analysis of other people's purchases. Worry about your minimum wage broke ass and not Coach.

Hey man, sorry if I come off like that. Actually I'm as conservative as anyone (I stand by Phil)

I'm simply stating an opinion, as this is a message board called gossip and opinion.

Funny you say that, let me tell you what me and my liberal friend were talking about friday night. He's talking about the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer. I started laughing. ''dude you came here in a car you can barley afford and your buying drinks with a credit card and your complaining about the rich getting richer?''

43% of Americans spend more then they earn each year. Consumer borrowing has increased 1700% since 1971. 70% of working Americans owe more then they have. Holy shit, if that's not a conservative raising awareness then go ahead and call me a liberal.

However I'm not sure how this turned into a money debate. I never said having nice things or having an abundance of money is a bad thing.

Lemme ask a couple simple questions.......you had an R1 didn't you?

Did you "need" it?
Was it the most efficient means of transportation?
Was it considered "acceptable"?

Did it make you grin inside your helmet when you twisted the throttle?

Sometimes you should buy things just because they make you grin.

Hey good point.

My biggest passion in life is motorcycling. I had a 2006 Yamaha R1. Loved that fucking bike. Never thought about getting rid of it until this september. Well after 160,000 miles I dropped a valve and blew the engine. Sad to say it was time for a new one. Now I have a 2013 R1. Did I buy it over the desire for something newer with more fancy buttons and gadgets I'll never use? Too impress the guys at bike night? Nope, it was just time for a new one. I wont buy a used bike, unlike cars bikes can be trashed after 5,000 miles. If that fucking valve didn't blow I'd still be riding the '06.

Now take my good riding buddy. He's getting rid of his Ducati 1199 he just bought this year for the BMW s1000rr hp4. The BMW is the newest and coolest bike for 2014. This will be the 6th bike he's had in the 6 seasons we've been riding together. Needless to say by the 2nd month of the riding season he'll be bored of that too and it will spend most of the year collecting dust in the garage.

I'm the one who loves motorcycling, he's the one who loves motorcycles. See the difference?

Theres a guy who dropped 30k on a Harley so he can ride it to the bar on friday night and to starbucks on Sunday morning. Theres another guy who only go's to the track and rides in the country were nobody will bother him and throwing 20,000 miles onto his bike a season. See the difference?

Yes, the last year made was 2011. When I bring it in for an oil change the Toyota mechanics all say the same thing. They have never seen one before. I think the dealer got one to put as their amazing price Camry tease. When people come in they don't want it. I have been driving stick for almost 40 years. It's a 6 speed. When I bought it my foot slipped off the clutch in the dealer parking lot and I peeled out unintentionally like I was saying, "see ya later suckers" as I pulled out of their parking lot.

bullshit. kh300 is projecting.

buying a nice car, and nice suit, something that you buy for yourself is why we work.

I have everything in life I have ever wanted. I live a very peaceful, quiet existence in the country. posessions do not bring me happiness. I already have happiness and peace. next year I'm thinking I might buy Z71 silverado duramax diesel or the new tundra. does this mean I'm shallow and using materialism to fill voids in my life? no. it means I have the income to buy things that I enjoy having.

you don't have to live a life of austerity to find peace and balance. nor does 'buying something' automatically disqualify you from that.

if your happy thinking your some kind of enlightned being cause you drive around in a 20 year old jeep held together with homemade rivets and duct tape fill your boots. don't assume because someone owns a certain type of vehicle your a better person or in a better place thAn they are.

judging someone on their possessions shows you have a lot further to go on your own journey.

Define afford. Now if I went out to buy a $250,000 lambo and took out a 40 year loan, could I say I can afford it as long as I make the payments?

I'd say "afford" is buying a 100k two year old lambo and making payments equating to a 7th of your total monthly income.

I would bet that's what coach is thinking, and I am with him. Why did the thread get turned into something not even relevant?

Either you need to work on your reading comprehension or your in complete denial of your real objectives. I have said many times I'm not referring to a new vehicle. I'm not a minimalist. I believe in abundance and prosperity. I agree with what you say, so I'm not sure why your arguing with me.

Do you guys understand the start of the thread? coach just bought a new truck and is looking to 'upgrade'. What is the reason for the upgrade? ego.I'm picking on coach but I see it all the time here. Look at me in my new car..some of you guys have serious ego issues.

Oh ya I got the money so why not buy. You don't have the money sorry. Your not rich. Any jerkoff can buy a bmw with the crazy loans they give out. I see crackheads driving mercedes all over the city.

I can guarantee you all, the wealthiest man on get big has never posted a picture of his car, or his house, or even talked about all of his stuff. He's rich, he doesn't need the ego boost from some forum members. I must be poor cuz my car is 2 years old. I need to get the 2014 so people know I'm doing great, lol what a sad existence that would be.

We work long hard hours at jobs we hate. Sacrifice family and recreation all in the pursuit of impressing people we don't know with things we don't need.

that's your whole problem and why I take exception to your posts despite then not originally being directed at me.

it's the way you think. the way you perceive those around you. 'he's a jerkoff/ crack head he has a bmw/ mercedes I see wanna be's driving them everywhere- look at me I'm cool in my new car'

wtf are you fucked? lol nice thought process.

your the one with issues dude not everyone else. your posts speaks volumes about your own ego.

Hate to call you out buddy, but your brainwashed. You honestly cannot tell yourself that you don't want this truck to make you happy. Stuff doesn't make anyone happy. That is reality. But since the economy requires people to constantly buy things, we are encouraged to never be happy with our stuff and always want more and better stuff. Don't fall for it!

I see this behavior all the time. Just like you coach. You buy a new truck, you get that exciting feeling. It quickly wears off and you start looking again. If you do get this new truck it's just going to restart the process. It's never ending and its exhausting.

The key to true happiness is to be satisfied with what you have. You got a brand new truck and your no longer happy with it? All ready looking for a new one? WTF. You're on your 4th marriage, correct? see a pattern?

Words of wisdom.  I have spent a lot of $$ on material things.  Makes you happy for a while...a very little while.

Your guess is as good as mine. All I did was post up a truck that I like that doesn't come out for another 2 years :-\

But I had a choice of buying an electric car, the Prius wouldn't be the one but I really like the Tesla.
