I asked Layne about this and he said the penguin was doing way too much cardio and was therefore metabolically damaged to the point of no return. He was going to die either way.

Couldn't this be the beginnings of a transformation of the evolution of Penguins? If more and more Penguins followed this one, how long would it be before the Penguin wouldn't need water and became strictly a land animal?

that penguin is just marching to the beat of its own drummer.  wants to explore.  Lots of humans headed out into the ocean or jungle, knowing they man never return, but they wanted to explore.  Pretty cool.
