Do you support privitization of postal services?
« on: December 26, 2013, 10:34:58 PM »
I thought I did... but they did show some weaknesses this year.   US Postal Service sure ain't perfect, but neither are the private firms.

http://www.politicususa.com/2013/12/26/ups-fedex-ruin-christmas-prove-republicans-wrong-killing-post-office.html
<snip>
People across the country got a look at what package delivery will look like if the Postal Service is privatized after both UPS and FedEx ruined Christmas by being unable to delivery holiday packages on time.

UPS admitted that some children would not receive their Christmas gifts on time because their system could not keep up with demand, “We understand the importance of your holiday shipments. However, the volume of air packages in our system exceeded the capacity of our network.” A spokesperson for Fed Ex said, “We’re sorry that there could be delays and we’re contacting affected customers who have shipments available for pickup.” Fed Ex’s solution was to make customers who paid for Christmas delivery go to their local Fed Ex store and pick up their packages on Christmas Day. If you didn’t have a local Fed Ex store, you were out of luck.

Things were so bad at Fed Ex that local depots were overwhelmed with packages to the point where they didn’t attempt to make deliveries. The AP confirmed that the delivery issues impacted Alabama, California, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia.

As one who lives in a nation with privatized postal services for the pat 30+ years... it's a trade off.

I've seen tremendous improvements in convenience. Now we have a post office in just about every corner drug store, ...but then again banking has evolved over the years as well. No more "bankers hours"

Used to be you could only go to one neighbourhood post office, and they were only open between 10am - 4pm.

Now, we have a post office on every other block, usually open within the hours of operation of its host location (most often between 7am - 9pm when located within a drug store or convenience store).

It's far more convenient than it used to be to retrieve parcels. People could simply pop in after work if parcels don't fit into compartment slots of super mailboxes. Not thrilled with the contract couriers they use to deliver oversized parcels that wont fit into a super mailbox though. Those SOBs never want to do their jobs. They often assume that since its during the day, no one will be home. They will often not even bother ringing the bell to deliver your pkg. Half the time, they'll be stepping out of their vehicle, and walking up your walkway simply to hang the door knocker ALREADY filled out, prior to even ringing your doorbell. The other half the time, they'll just leave the parcel at the neighbourhood post office, resulting in a regular letter carrier having to leave a notice in your mailbox to go retrieve your parcel at the post office.

They don't do that with me anymore, because I've caught them too many times approaching my door with a pre-filled door knocker, ...and by now, the local couriers know there's always someone here during the day.

It's worth a try.

Aside from dealing with the occassional angry canine, postal workers aren't exactly high-risk workers like firefighters. They don't need pensions.

What?!  Everyone needs a pension!
You have to have some sort of recurring residual income, especially when you get too old to work.

Interest off savings?

Do you have any idea how much money one has to have already saved up for it to throw off a decent income?  Bernanke has kept interest rates artificially low. There's no income in savings anymore son, not unless one is using the right vehicle for those savings, ...but I'm not allowed to talk about that.  :P

Savings that are invested to spin off income are not generally referred to as savings, but rather as investments.

There is a reason languages use a variety of words. These words have meaning, and make for more precise communication. Don't mock me for your lack of communication skills. My bad for expecting specificity & precision from a lazy person with a limited vocabulary.
