'do you compete' is the most common question and I do my best to distance myself from any association w that as quickly as I can.

  • Oh crap.
I like to tell people I don't exercise AT ALL, and say shit like "Soul food, n!gga," when strangers ask me questions. This is obviously not a good approach.

I am a bodybuilder.

Nope. When people comment on things like my traps and shoulders I just tell them I used to work out lots.

Talking about bodybuilding is futile - the discussion goes no where. I secretly like it, but it's mainly for schmoes and narcissistic saddists like myself. I don't want to talk to some fatass who wants me to praise their fatceps and give them tips to get a 6 pack. Lift hard, take lots of drugs and go fuck yourself. That's my best advice.

  • I hope I'm not boring you.

Talking about bodybuilding is futile

This.

Honestly, your average person doesn't really care about this stuff outside of perhaps talking bench or bicep numbers. Or perhaps telling you about their cousin in the slam that could clean and squat #950 before he blew his back out.

Unless someone really mentions something that proves their knowledge, and seems like it might be interesting conversation, I just smile, pat my belly, and go "Ya, I like to lift, helps keep the weight off" or something similar.

For the last 5-10 years, I seem to be saying "Ya, but I can't fight" more than anything.

I say I used to play football a long time ago, and that now I just stay in shape playing with my kids. I usually don't feel like talking about bodybuilding with people who don't really care about it. It's my thing...they don't really want me to talk about, they're just being nice when they ask me. I spare them the indignity of having to suffer through me talking about my passion for unilateral work versus barbell work for improved lat symmetry.

"Do you compete?"

"You have beefy arms."

"Don't mess with this guy..he;s got muscles."

"Do you workout?"

Almost every time I just downplay it because I quickly realize no one really cares.

hahaha that guy is awesome. the 'do you even lift flow chart'

'are people mirin?' -> 'what's that?' -> 'obviously not' -> do you even lift?

'do you do bodyweight exercises' -> 'yes' -> 'are you a white guy?' -> 'yes' -> 'that's called yoga' -> do you even lift?

hahaha fucking funny dude.

I get asked all the time if I compete. I try to distance myself as much as possible from bodybuilding. The permabulkers and juice pigs who always seem to be getting ready to do a show (yet never compete) have played a large role in ruining the culture of the gym. I say it's more desirable to have aesthetics everyday than to be fat and " diet" down to look good for one weekend a year.....

I don't tell people I'm a bodybuilder.  People look at me and their eyes tell them I'm a bodybuilder.

Any of you for which this is not the case, you're doing it wrong.
