Thailand is a fairly big medical tourism hub. Walk into a Hostpital like Bumrungrad and you could be forgiven for thinking you just arrived in a 5 star hotel.

They use the same drugs as the US, most of the doctors are trained in the US. Many at places like Harvard.

At Bumrungrad, considered one of the top 3 international hospitals here, where perhaps 50% of the clientele are from overseas, expect to pay the following:

Room & Board - about $200-$300 a night depending on the room type you choose ($4,800 in the US)
CT Scan - about $750 ($7,983 in the US)
Anastheasia - about $100-$300 - depending on duration ($4,562 in the US)

And this is considered EXPENSIVE for Thailand.

With the Room & Board - most rooms have a sofa bed so family can stay. There's no visiting hours, you can come when you want and stay all night if you like. The rooms all have 42" wall TVs with cable TV.

Recent trips we have had there - my wife had our daughter, a C-section and 4 nights in hopsital - they do a package for the whole thing including all tests, doctors/surgeons fees, IV meds but not including dressings. Total cost came to $3,500

You are absolutely getting gouged in the US - sure labor is cheaper out here but standard of care is top notch. There is no reason for these prices.

Here is a room in the maternity ward.... standard room...

You know shit is fucked up when a hospital in new jersey was charging $80,000 and a hospital in NYC was charging $11,000 for the same exact procedure. This just proves there is no objective criteria. Hospitals will charge whatever they want.

This thread is just another prove that Michael Moore was telling the truth in Sicko.. ;D

Is that the reason why he is so hated, because he is telling the truth? Americans don't want to hear truth, they like fairytales much more.. And when Obama try to change this crappy health care system, they hate Obama. Damn how smart they are..

For most Americans, the thought of paying an extra $.001 in taxes and possibly helping someone else is abhorrent because that is Communism.

On the other hand, getting ripped off by a hospital for $250,000 is fine because that is Capitalism.

Come to the UK and you get healthcare for free.

Be stuck on a filthy ward, with 20 sick people and 2 nurses running around.

The Dr appears for about 45 mins and gives each patient 2-3 minutes of his time with the curtain drawn - and neither prescribes or recommends anything.

My grandad had one horrible, rock-hard little pillow whilst in agony with cancer so we took him our own bedding in, and he stuck 2.5ft away from a guy whom had lung cancer.

This guy was coughing constantly and fighting for his breath. Whilst we were there they drew the curtains and the priest came along to give him his last fairy tale.

When your a "paying" customer they treat you far better. Ive had private healthcare and it's night and day in comparison. Your own room - choose something to eat off a menu etc.

In the UK we have no choice, they take the money in taxes and that's that. There is no "opt out" policy for those who want to make their own arrangements.

I had experience with a national health hospital last year and it was excellent. My family member was rushed in as an emergency and was in for 7 days. For private care you can get BUPA for around £100 per month. Or about half what it costs to smoke 20 cigarettes a day.

The trouble with the USA is that doctors, insurance companies, hospitals and drug companies are allowed to act as collusive oligopolies and make unregulated excess profits.

The 0.1% of the capital holders make a shit load of money from the poor 99.9%  all in the name of freedom and democracy.  After all, anything else would be Communistical would it not.  ???   This is because Americans do not accept their place as blue or white collar ordinary Joes. They are brainwashed into thinking they too will be millionaires  one day and will become part of the 0.1%.  Laughable really and sad in a way but I guess we are all just jealous of their freedom. ::)

Each state has its own insurance policies & companies. The kicker is that insurance companies do not have to compete across state lines which is what they wanted.

So, this is right wing nonsense.  The sooner people realise helping others IS helping ourselves, the better off the planet will be.  A community of sick people can only be bad for the Individual.

I admit, the system isn't perfect, but it sure beats paying tens of thousands of dollars to get your appendix taken out.  And for those who can afford it, private health insurance is still an option.

Health care system is so overrated in US. There are much more important issues to discuss such as gun control.
By the way I hope he did not have to take a loan from the bank to pay that bill.

On the other hand, getting ripped off by a hospital for $250,000 is fine because that is Capitalism.

what's abhorrent is having gov't force you to either get healthcare or pay a 1, 2, or 2.5% FINE based on your gross income. (like a FINE you get for breaking the law)

then you get healthcare that you can afford MONTHLY (say, 200$) and you can't afford to use it because the deductible is fucking 3x your gross monthly income.

so, you either pay the fine and still don't have healthcare and if you get sick, go to the ER and get a bill for 120k next month and eventually get sued

or

pay 10% of your income towards health insurance that you can't afford to use anyways, and still get sued when you get sick and can't pay the hospital bill... (or won't pay... come collect fuckers)

and when the hospital finds out you have insurance, they'll milk your stay for everything they can and turn a 1 night stay into a MANDATORY 4 night stay and when you go to check out (because you can't afford to miss another day of work... how you gonna afford to pay the insurance if you're not working??), they make you sign out against doctors orders and you get stuck with the entire bill because insurance won't pay a dime.

fucking socialists.

In Romania is different, obviously. There is medical insurance and hospital fees. Dismal stuff. However, if you don't tip the doctors, they will not operate on you.

easy fix...

"hey doc, here's your tip; if you don't operate on my wife/kid/family, I'm gonna burn your house down.. with your wife and kids in it.... then about a year later, when you're done mourning, I'm gonna come find you again, and cut off your hands with an axe. Hope this helps.. good day"

You're delusionnal.

I'm french, some money is directly cutt from my salary for health system, and i need to pay a private  insurance because so much health care are poorly or not managed by the social system (tooth eye etc).

so the "free" social security cost me at least 250 euros each month, and i go to the doctor once a year for a doctor's certificate for the sport.

On the other side thousand of ppl are coming in France for healthcare holiday, and health is free for illegal alien (even tooth and eye, plastic surgery, medical assisted procreation).

This is socialism.

Maybe Michael Moore can help you Americanos?  :D

In Austria the system is pretty swell but the swarm of foreigners+local lowlives is rapidly clogging up the system.
Typical ambulance situation
Mongrel - "Doctore, me belly be hurtin'... what does me do?"
Doctor   - "Try ripping a fart asshead!!!"

Plus it's steadily diverging into a two class system where when you're really into healing up and knowing your ills you have to pay and be connected.

Still beats the third world country you really come from, where some crackhead cuts you open with dirty tools, and you die from some infection that had been easily treatable for 100 years.

Good luck out there in the third world lol.
