Did you just watch a documentary on this or something?  Why are you so fired up about it?  Fact is, we were at war, and war is not very civilized.  Read my, as well as Nick, Shockwave and a few others responses in this thread.  They would have never surrendered.  Dropping a bomb on an uncharted island to show them the power of the bomb, thus forcing them to surrender?  Yeah, a lot of good that did between us and Stalin, he saw it first hand.  Imperial Japan was a force to be reckoned with, and their nationalistic beliefs would not let them surrender without something like what we did happening first.  History not only suggests it, but proves it.

1 atomic bomb dropped on the Tora Bora cave complex on Sept 12, 2001 and no ground invasion trying to "win the hearts and minds" and a a whole lot more Americans, Afghans, and probably Iraqis would be alive today to say nothing of the money, and environmental costs of making bullets, gas, MRE, bombs, etc and everything else that we have gone through.  And it would be unlikely anyone would attack the U.S. in the near future for fear of the bomb and thus no need for the NSA and TSA saving more money and preserving freedom.  People need to have a realistic understanding of deterrence and costs of using the military before judging based upon ignorance.

Japan was not targeting civilians, they were targeting a military compound where they figured everyone was military personnel.

People seem to forget the scale of the War too. The US lost 420,000 people. England lost a bit more than that, Australia 40,000, Russia tens of millions, etc.... many being civilian draftees. The US was at War for 6 years, the others longer. Everyone was War weary.

If we were to institute Operation Downfall, the thought was 2 - 4 million injured, with 400,000 - 800,000 being fatalities just on the US side, with 25,000 - 30,000 of them in the first month.

The Japanese fatality rate would be estimated at near 10 times that.

It made sense to drop the bomb. They had ample warning with Pottsdam, they had a chance after Hiroshima. They have no one to blame but themselves.
