Wrestlemanis Sad State
« on: January 18, 2014, 04:08:36 AM »
Like every wrestling fan we all get excited about the SuperBowl of wrestling but IMO it has become a sad state of affairs

Buildups/storylines were done over months, with "A" stars in phenomenal matches and future stars made

Fast forward over the last few years..

Wrestlemania has been built on returning PT stars, Rock, Brock and now Batista....

What does this say about the branding power of creative that they cannot take what they currently have and catapult them to the stars..

Caesaro, Sandow, Rollins (althought he is on the Horizon) etc etc...

Very disappointing

I couldn't agree more. Similar to the holding back Daniel Bryan.
If I was on the roster and not on WM but they brought back Rock, Austin, Batista I'd be very discouraged.
What does that tell tnose guys? "Hey thanks for working hard all year but this movie star is getting your spot on WM."

Ive been saying this for a while now. And in all fairness, when you look at the roster, by the classic standards of Mania you would have probably 4 guys in the show. The standard today is so poor

I agree that it's all about the old names these days.  Last years main events were Rock vs Cena, Brock vs HHH, and Taker vs Punk.  Only 2 guys out of 6 who we see week in / week out.

The really annoying thing is that they always put these guys against each other.  Taker vs Punk is OK, gives Punk a nice reward for the work he puts in, but why go to the cost of bringing Brock back and then stick him in with HHH?  All that expense and HHH uses it to put himself over again.

Brock seems happy to lose, so why not put him in with Daniel Bryan for instance?  Bryan's got the talent to work a good match against Brocks style, and it would push him to a new level if he gets the win.  You could have a proper David vs Goliath build over several months, really get the crowd behind him, and the place would go crazy when he pins Lesnar.

Maybe they got burned when Cena went up against Miz in the main event a couple of years ago?  That wasn't a good match at all, so maybe they're wary of putting unproven guys in that spotlight?  Saying that, HHH vs Orton a few years back wasn't great either.

How much does Mania cost to watch, now?

£14.95 in the UK, so about $24?  Not sure what it costs in the States.

Thats the problem....WWE is forced to bring back guys like Rock..Hogan...Piper...Au stin...etc because the current lack luster roster stinks. You think your gonna sell out a dome stadium 70-80,000 people to watch Kofi Kingston? The Miz? Fandango? It aint happening. Thats what happens when you monopolize the market. How many times are we supposed to see a 50 year old Undertaker defend a streak?

Exactly. This streak has been given mythical status and yet it is becoming unrealistic for him to maintain it. If he is to fall then who is going to end it? Hes beaten just about every big name he industry has had for over 20 years and will have to hang the boots up sooner or later. Alot expect him to lose then retire, its the best way for a pro to go out but there is nobody worth that W in the modern age of wrestling.

Mark my words...once HHH..Batista..Rock...Les ner and all these other names of high status get too old to even merit a second glance you will truly see the end off an era and a return of territory wrestling.

RE UT, I can go either way with him. Yes he is truly an "attraction" once a year and he does pull #'s. As an aside, has anyone seen that Sting is officially done with TNA?? Perhaps there is last minute hope that Sting will show up in WWE.... People have talked about Sting vs UT for yrs.....this truly could be epic, truly no way to know who would win.

Cant help but think back in 2000's when the roster was soo deep with "A" talent, Rock, Austin, Foley, Angle, HHH and even a few B++ to fall back in.

Fast forward now, we have Super Cena, Punk, Orton (debatable) and Daniel Bryan. 2 of these guys go down.....who can they truly hotshot?? Perhaps Reigns but who else???

In a few more years, Taker will be old enough to worry about defending against a different kind of "streak!"

Sting v Taker is 10 - 15 years too late to garner interest, both are waaaaaaay passed their peaks and unable to perform the moves that would have lit this match up.

Well, the Miz did main-event WrestleMania with Cena. The issue isn't bringing the old stars back per se. It's about (fill-in-the-blank) vs. Cena.

Look at the last 10 WM main events.

WM20 - Triple H vs. Benoit vs. Michaels (World title match)
WM21 - Triple H vs. Batista (World title match)
WM22 - Cena vs. Triple H (WWE title match)
WM23 - Cena vs. Michaels (WWE title match)
WM24 - Undertaker vs. Edge (World title match)
WM25 - Triple H vs. Orton (WWE title match)
WM26 - Undertaker vs. Michaels (Streak vs. Career, no DQ or countout)
WM27 - Miz vs. Cena (WWE title, later made no DQ)
WM28 - Rock vs. Cena
WM29 - Rock vs. Cena (WWE title match)

You basically have to mix the old school with the new to get a good main event.

You just prooved my point. 90%of those names u mentioned are mega stars of the past that were purposely brought back just for a WM match to fill seats. Half those WM's u mentioned were rated as some of the worst ever by the pro wrestling torch. No one gives a shit about the Miz and Cena. As it stands right now the WWE is averaging 3,000 - 6,000 attendance figures on house shows with your golden boy Cena and friends running the ship while the eighties had an average of 10,000 - 22,000 sellout crowds. HHH..Taker...Foley..Rock ...Michaels are all stars of the past that would guarantee u a good match well worth the money to watch at a big WM PPV. My post was reflecting the entire card..not soley the main event.

theyre definetely trying to take it into a new direction imo...not sure it will work though
with batista lensar cena and orton all battling it out for the big prize, trying for a new attitude era world title feel

batista and lesnar have a short shelf life though and dont know who they can replace them with
reigns and big e maybe?
not enough personalities in the roster.

god knows why bryan isn't in a bigger angle. completely wasted with the wyatt thing
