Christie camp held Sandy relief money hostage, mayor alleges

Two senior members of Gov. Chris Christie’s administration warned a New Jersey mayor earlier this year that her town would be starved of hurricane relief money unless she approved a lucrative redevelopment plan favored by the governor, according to the mayor and emails and personal notes she shared with msnbc.

The mayor, Dawn Zimmer, hasn’t approved the project, but she did request $127 million in hurricane relief for her city of Hoboken – 80% of which was underwater after Sandy hit in October 2012. What she got was $142,000 to defray the cost of a single back-up generator plus an additional $200,000 in recovery grants.

In an exclusive interview, Zimmer broke her silence and named Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno and Richard Constable, Christie’s community affairs commissioner, as the two officials who delivered messages on behalf of a governor she had long supported.

(snip)

In this account – supported by email, public records and Zimmer’s own diary entries – Christie’s inner circle was willing to cut off devastated constituents, muscle a friendly mayor and arrange public funds to finance a study for a project the governor supported. In a news conference last week, Christie rejected the notion that his administration engages in retribution or seeks political payback. Zimmer’s account paints a different portrait.

at some point, nobody is going to believe "My whole inner circle knew, but I didn't...."

First they hide Bridgegate from him.  Now they hide this from him.  Where are the getbiggers saying it's totally normal, and Christie is innocent.

Wow... Look at these numbers... NJ residents may turn against him VERY quickly once they realize he punished PEOPLE in order to get back at his political enemies.

Anemic Sandy aide had been noted was cause of concern for a while.

You may have already seen Mayor Zimmer in the news this week. Hoboken received only 1% of the aid they had requested for Hurricane Sandy relief and planning funds even though it was one of the hardest-hit communities in the state during the storm. At one point, 80% of the 50,000 person city was flooded. If you remember the footage of water gushing through an underground subway station, that was in Hoboken; it has, in fact, the highest per-capita use of public transit of any city in America. Yet so far the state of New Jersey has given the city about $350,000 from the billions of dollars in federal disaster relief and planning aid that it is charged with administering. That’s about $6 per resident. It has been enough to pay for one major planning study and to buy one backup generator for an $18 million emergency storm water pump.

50,000 people. 80% flooded. $6 a head.

News outlets and the mayor have both wondered if the anemic aid was a punishment for Zimmer not endorsing the governor’s reelection bid. Mayors in Jersey City, Elizabeth, and other New Jersey municipalities have been asking the same question since Fort Lee mayor Mark Sokolich raised the possibility that his refusal to endorse Christie led to the lane closures on GWB and the four-day-long traffic nightmare in that town.

This Hoboken story and the Fort Lee/GWB story might seem like separate tales. But they’re not. Moreover, these latest revelations put to rest the notion that Hoboken’s Sandy aid or the Fort Lee/GWB story have anything to do with local Democratic officials’ endorsement of the governor during his reelection campaign. Forget about the endorsements. It never really added up anyway.

The subpoenaed documents in Bridgegate show that the Christie administration used the Port Authority as an extension of their political operation, although we do not yet know to what end.

And the Hoboken story clearly demonstrates the Christie administration took steps to aid the material interest of a client of the chairman of that agency.

At the time, everyone just thought you were picking on libs/rinos.

Now we know you were 100% right... Obama, Christie and their spiteful criminal enterprise were really punishing NJ citizens for the mayor they chose.

Christie's future ambitions are in trouble. The "plausible" part of the "plausible deniability" equation is going to be severely questioned.

And memories of him viciously attacking a woman will start to resurface in people's minds.

I don't think what he knew or when is going to matter much at this point.
Bruce Springsteen got on international television and caricatured <sp?> him. He's toast.

Washington (CNN) - A day after Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer rankled the administration of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie with allegations that his office withheld Superstorm Sandy relief funding unless she pushed through a redevelopment project, Zimmer defended her claims.

She told CNN that Trenton is playing politics with money needed to rebuild her city in the aftermath of the storm.

"It's stunning. It's outrageous. But it's true," Zimmer told CNN's Candy Crowley in an interview Sunday morning.

Zimmer appeared on MSNBC a day earlier to level charges that members of Christie's administration, including Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno, pressured her to approve a redevelopment project sought by The Rockefeller Group, a real estate developer with ties to the governor's office. She told MSNBC host Steve Kornacki that Guadagno threatened her at a May 13 event they both attended in Hoboken. Zimmer later recorded the conversation in journal entries she shared with CNN, and recalls the lieutenant governor warning her she had "to move forward with the Rockefeller project" and calling the demand a "direct message from the governor."

A spokesman for Christie, Colin Reed, dismissed the report as "partisan politics."

The Hoboken mayor refuted that characterization as false.

"I haven't been a part of the Democratic machine," Zimmer said, citing her frequent praise of Christie and what she describes as a solid working relationship between two executives. "I did have a really good relationship (with Christie) so I couldn't believe they were doing this."

the ass covering is already starting  :D

The Rockefeller Group told CNN, "We have no knowledge of any information pertaining to this allegation. If it turns out to be true, it would be deplorable."

The previous distribution of relief funds to Hoboken vs. other areas, ...especially taking into account the relative damage experienced by those areas, will either refute these claims or lend credence to them.

here's the thing... We all have seen Christie over the past few years.  The dude is fearless, he doesn't back down... Someone challenges him and let's be honest, he JUMPS to attack them for bullshit claims.  He's been criticized for it, but it's who he is.  Dude is an attack dog.

Now... Allegations like these are HUGE... and methinks if Christie was innocent, he'd be the one headlining all of these Suunday talk shows, proclaiming his innocence from the rooftops.  When someone is  100% innocent, you bet your ass they're right up front denying it.

Christie being so quiet... none of his team even out there anwering questions... that's really troubling.  When Mayor Zimmer  says quite simply, "It's true", I tend to believe it.  Such a statement, if false, would be easy to disprove with numbers showing how Christie spread out that $.  Easily to prove her wrong, if she's lying.

Yes you did.  I thought you were just pissed he was snubbing Romney a few days before the election.

Turns out you were right... Imagine how NJ residents will feel when they realize they were punished so badly for the mayor they chose.

We all remember, but it came off as bitterness that Christie's praise of Obama's response to the crisis was giving Obama a boost in the polls that threatened to interfere with Romney's imminent LANDSLIDE  :P

There's two ways to look at that. Many NJ Republicans were affected by the traffic jams. Many NJ Republicans will remember how the democrats DIDN'T play politics with relief funds, but their own Republican governor DID. This could have the opposite effect of rallying Dem, ...and angering Repubs into voting Dem.

I don't know if SC could handle that.  :D

LMFAO - like this is going to work?

First off, 33, mad props for shoving shit in Christie's face - dude earned it by hurting people for political gain.

You know Christie is in deep shite when he's resorted to killing the messenger lol.

Everyone knows when a person resorts to attacking the person repeating the message, they have ZERO argument for it.

Plus, let's not forget how much Christie LOVED msnbc in the past. Dude's been a fixture on that network.
