The difference, IMO, is that liberals, i mean EXTREME liberals, will always be 30% of the population.

Maybe I just don't understand the point of your question but Sanders was a 4-term city mayor, then taught political science at Harvard's Kennedy School of Gov't, then was elected to the the House of Representatives for 16 years and has now been a Senator for 8 years. 

You can disagree with his politics all ya want (he's a self-avowed socialist so many will) but he's known to be a very straight shooter, especially compared to someone like Bachmann who, besides having said some patently crazy things, rarely answers a question directly.

For my money, Sanders and Elizabeth Warren are the 2 most sensible and compelling voices on the left these days.
