Dammit need glasses advice
« on: February 02, 2014, 06:27:19 AM »
Always prided myself w hawk vision

Turn 50 this year can't see shit at distance.
Also real close two feet or less blurry.
Got rx.
Doc says I need two pair or progressives.

Never wore glasses.
Easier to just get progressives or have singles? R progressives a pain?
What about plastic ones compared to the glasses w those lil nose pads.
Seeing as these r turning out to be pretty costly n I don't know a Dam thing about them just looking for some advice.

I have lenses and glasses.  Some mornings dont want to bother with lenses and I have allergies which makes them a pain sometimes.  I now have progressives and really like them.

If you don't wanna fuss with contact lenses, you could just keep a pair in your car for driving, and keep one with you for reading

One thing I would suggest with glasses is to get the ones with "hinges" on the side.  Not sure what they are really called but they keep them more snug to your head.  You will know what I mean when you start looking at them.

It's unusual to develop myopia with age.  Usually you develop nearsightedness before ten, then with age you have to get bifocals to see close up as well.  Progressives (Bifocals) can be pricey, and you will think you will go crazy, but three week and they will seem normal.

BUY ONLINE. I got my son's glasses for $23 shipped and my wife's bifocals for $54 shipped. You will need to get an eye exam and ask for a copy (be sure they measure your PD - or pupillary distance). Then go online and just type in the script and pick the frame.

Lifehacker has a good article on it: http://lifehacker.com/5157425/save-bundles-of-cash-by-buying-eyeglasses-online

Watch the added cost.

progressives cost more and are no better IMO and experience
no anti-glare treatment. Worthless IMO and experience
most likely $25 reading glasses from CVS, Longs, etc will work perfectly and you can find good/good looking frames.

Dam. At lens crafters. They want 539!  Jesus. Progressives. They advice anti glare. Prolly up selling. I kinda wanted single lens so I wouldn't have to turn my head so much.

I'm 53 and had to face it and get some glasses for reading (as everything appeared to be written in Chinese.)
Also for driving Tho they were not really necessary but have helped as i don't get eye strain and blood shot eyes
from driving as before, i do a lot miles.
It took a couple of weeks to adjust to wearing them, I don't wear them when training Thankfully i can still see people
and benches, weights ect. Ha
Overall was a good move for me and have helped a lot.
Sadly we all have to age.. :( :(

I'm legally blind in one eye, and I used to work in an optical lab. When it comes to your vision don't ever cheap out.

Since you've never worn corrective vision wear, progressives might be best. You won't have s problem adjusting to them.

I suggest glasses and lenses....i wear both and its nice to have the option.

Thanks everyone.  I ordered a pair of progressives that come in in a week.  another question.  If you wear distance glasses for driving and then go to look at your speedometer or something close do the glasses make it blurry?  That's the concept that I do understand. I'd rather get single for driving cuz I hear u can move your eyes around instead of your head.  With progressives you have to keep your eyes fixed in the sweet spot of the glasses n turn your head.   If i can see decent from from about 18 inches to 15 feet how can a person like that wear single lens?  I do hear progressives suck for like watching tv n shit.  Cuz if you lean back u r looking thru the bottom of the glasses which r made for reading.  Guess i'll find out. Can't believe I actually got worthy advice from from getbig haha.

BUY NOTHING FROM LENS CRAFTERS. NOTHING.

$22 at CVS Pharmacy. Lens Crafters would charge $350 for the exact same thing.

At 50 you've probably been half blind for 10 years, haha.

If you are just losing your close up sight you can get away with reading glasses from the drugstore for a while.

If you can't see shit or have some style...buy some decent glasses...rimless titanium frame. You will end up wearing them everyday.
