question about Mentzer
« on: February 07, 2014, 01:43:04 PM »
I just thought about this. There really is no pics at all of Mike During 82-90's? Totally disapeared out of the spotlight.

I read that he used amphetamines and went insane? And I remember some source that said he was institutionalized for mental issues or something like that. True?

beating an old horse here i know..

There are some pics, but they've never seem to make it up online. He looked bad in them, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between him and your average bulky man. The few candid ones I've seen show him smoking, pretty fat, and eating doughnuts by the box full. He also had a fondness for Zubaz or sweat pants which added to the look. The one saving grace was that his face stayed leanish through those years.

Losing the Olympia did a number on him, coupled with heavy amphetamine use. There are stories of him running around naked, hiding thinking Arnold was sending hitmen after him, etc.... Real speed freak stuff.

I read it was because his father died and his business and bb mag didn't do as well as he'd hoped. The 80 Olympia made him sour on competing for sure.

Dude.. I dont disagree with you there. Mentzer was my idol in my teens when i started lifting. Admired the physique and enjoyed his writings. Just wondering about these things because it's not very clear info on what happened in those years.

Perhaps his father dying, but I'm not sure about the business end being a bust. The magazine did end, but there was a guy on another board that had business dealings with him in the early 80's that mentioned that Mentzer was still getting crates of mail every week with orders and offers to host  seminars, but Mike just didn't have the drive to do many things anymore.

He annoyed Arthur Jones enough during those years too, that Jones wouldn't even take a meeting with him after a certain point.

Alright. Guess he fell deep into drug abuse in the 80's. Too bad.

some good info in this thread by Vince.

Dude had it all - brain, looks and muscle.
I remember being in shock about how he looked later on in life... remember the tape where he trained that queer german Marcus. A buddy and I used to laugh so hard about him and his brother Ray that  we had tears running down our cheeks... I felt real guilty after laughing.  :D

Mike died hours after the filming finished and Ray 2 days later. You are watching dead men walking there.

were mike and ray the same person?

even seen at same time?

i think hit is good and mike was awesome for a short guy

his training methods and talking seemed too long winded to me

i was like dude
 simplify

I think anyone do 1 controled set of a few basic movements and 1 minute run as fast as you can every other day will make progress esp when eating balanced meals and getting 8 hour sleep

I think miek confused long winded with smart.

The smartest things are genius simple and concise.

I wonder if he got aids seriously, like I suspect wilt chamerlain of getting.

Quick deterioration physically as the drugs grind down the body systems sustaing him.

then sudden end

I read all the Mike Mentzer materials I could find, and own all the videos and the seminars I could find of his. I learned as much as I could from his writings, I thought he was a genius and a lot of advice (way more precise than his peers who seemed completely uneducated in comparison) regardless of the drug use later in his career and whatever else may have happened to his mental health.   Objectively, you can't deny that he had a huge impact on the science of (over) training and influenced a great number of athletes.

With that creepy combination of pedo glasses and stache, it's safe to say that Mike Mentzer was the Jerry Sandusky of bodybuilding during '82-'90s.

Hope this helps.

Tommy would know more specifics cuz I never was n still am not a gym socializer but tommy worked the counter. I used to see mentzer all the time back in the day looking like a homeless potbellied shrimp. He would hang out in Venice golds parking lot mumbling n rambling nonsense. He was kicked out fir a while at least that was the story back then. Eventually he got unbanned n I guess somewhat straightened up cuz I began seeing him training guys back in golds shortly before he died. That's all I got. But this was in the late 80s very early 90s?  Not sure wen he died can't remember. Mentzer did look incredible back in the day!

The word nerdy comes to mind when I see the brothers speak on camera.
Not very cool.

Mentzer made me think back in the day but later I realized his theories weren't very scientific.
Programming by reading Ayn Rand doesn't work.
I still believe in relatively low volume though. And I believe in the strength/size connection.
