in the US, if you have EVEN a drop of black in your blood, youre black. Youre part of the black community. Thays how they view themselves here.
True. And the sad part is that the "one drop theory" comes from the government, originally.
In the late 1800's, after the civil war, instead of being treated the same as whites under the law, blacks were subjected to official, state-sanctioned segregation laws ("Jim Crow" laws) in many states. (Separate drinking fountains, lunch counters, back of the bus, interracial marriage prohibition -- the list goes on and on, actually.)
The "One Drop" rule was adopted to for the purposes of deciding who was and was not subjected to these laws. (I think the One Drop rule was eventually changed to 1/16 black, but I could be wrong.)
BTW, shit like this (some Jim Crow laws persisted through the 1950's and early 1960's) is why I'm not so quick to chime in when others are telling today's blacks to suck it up because their race's past isn't too much different than that of other ethnic groups that immigrated to the USA.
(It was A LOT different -- Only group that had it worse were the American Indians.)
