I was state champ for a few years.  Older brother won the nationals.  We competed in tournaments all over the country, even in the World Open.  Haven't played competitively in many years though.  It is a very fun game however.

Do you compete, or just play for fun?

I played so much chess that I use to look at people like chess pieces. Literally tho. But to answer your question, no, not that I'm aware of. But I'm not a general in the military who has to look at things in such a way.

I played a lot as a kid. I remember playing in a massive school tournament in year 6 where my team got second.

Have played online but not for years. Yahoo boards, that was fun, especially speed chess.

The Backgammon boards were weird, so many weird people that started telling me about orgies they had and their sex life/fetishs. Maybe because it's more luck and people were more relaxed.

I've never competed formally but I grew up playing lots of older Russians in my eastern-euro community who taught me loads about theory and tactics.  I never thought I was that great but even these days I tend to crush most people whom I play a casual game with.  Studying chess as a kid (now 31yo) never interested me as chess books at the local library were just masses of plain text and overly-complex board setups, but these days I've renewed my interest with more accessible ways of studying (ie. lectures/demos from GMs on youtube and such).  Studying and playing chess is for sure more than a hobby.  The logical processes behind much of the tactical plays and understanding why various openings make sense helps the mind develop into overall a more "big picture" and "strategic" thinker, IMO.

There was a guy called Greg the Body who used to post on various bodybuilding forums who was supposedly a grand master and teacher of chess. He was also a total weirdo who gradually got banned from all the boards including ironage and rawiron. He also claimed to be a great wrestler and weight lifter but I always assumed he was an old Jimmy Saville type in reality.

wow some serious players lurking here----im good at the average level but poor if you're talking about higher levels

im around 1300-1400 level (been playing around 10 months or so)

my pops used to play in tournaments and actually played spatsky in a exhibition match where he played something like 20 people at once

I usually play on the app "chesstime"

im a complete rookie to speed chess-----haven't explored that side of chess yet----fastest Ill play is 10 or 15 min games

one of my buddies is extremely good at both speed chess and slow paced----Im lucky if I can get 1 win out of 10 (but my game has gotten far better playing him)
