BMW had bought an American carbonfiber manufacturer, and they are producing carbonfiber intensive cars like the i3 and i8 (monocoque, doors, etc) which have huge waiting lists. And are using many carbonfiber parts in the upcoming M3/M4. And the future 5 and 7 series you will see more carbonfiber parts as well.
So, they bought a manufacturer so that they could produce carbonfiber cheaper.
The American companies, particularly Ford with it's new F-150 have gone the aluminum route, and supposedly, the trucks will cost MORE to fix. So, you get a lighter vehicle that gets better gas mileage, whose metal will cost the manufacturer more, and you more to fix...
So, basically they find a way to screw you either way.
