Tell you a little story.....
I was at a very hardcore gym one day(this had to be about 10 or so years ago) It was a chest day and I was in the middle of benching. In walks this little boy. He had to be no more than 11 or 12 years old. He was black, in a predominately all white area. A little black boy. Immediately all the white gym goers pretended he wasn't there. He went up to the counter and asked if he could use the equipment. The person behind the counter pretended to ignore this little black boy. He asked again, the employee said sure but not the squat rack. It's dangerous and he or the gym manager didn't want to be held reliable if he injures himself.
So this little black boy does what all little and especially black children do when they're are told not to do something. He saunters over to the squat rack.
It was being occupied by one of the biggest guys in the gym. He was squatting 405. The little black boy just watched in awe as this giant of a man moved this weight up and down like it was nothing. As soon as he was finished with his set, the little black boy asked he could try it out. At this moment the whole gym is listening.
"You think you can lift that?", said the man. He steps into the squat rack. The little black boy positions himself under the bar. He can't make it budge. He tries again. Nothing. The whole gym erupts into a volcano of laughter. He runs out of the gym crying. I would never forget that moment. Never.
Do you know who that little black boy was?
That's right it was none other than the future Mr. Olympia himself, Phil Heath
