The only thing I could come up with is he had fever before a show due to a kidney problem and got sufficiently scared to stop lifting. Too bad, he had a sick pair of wheels and a really compact waist.

PHIL HILL won n.o.c's and did mro that yr and gone..he was narrow but massive legs/arms/thick compact upperbody,,he could have done damage for a while.

I remember he tore his pec, he wasn't the same after, thats why he retired.
I remember reading an article at the time, he said he was actually relieved when his pec went because it gave him a reason to get off the treadmill.
He was really referring to getting off the amounts of gear he was using without a break.

There's a difference between competing, and succeeding. He had a few great showings in 2003 and 2004, and then fell hard. Sadly, he got serious about BB late in the game.

Guy competed for 20 years, its hardy falling off after that length of time.
