Norwegians Beautiful Prison Island

On Bastoy prison island in Norway, the prisoners, some of whom are murderers and rapists, live in conditions that critics brand 'cushy' and 'luxurious'. Jan Petter Vala, who is serving a prison sentence for murder, has hands the size of dinner plates and shoulders like those of an ox. In an alcoholic rage, he used his brutish strength to strangle his girlfriend to death a few years ago.

There's a beach where prisoners sunbathe in the summer, plenty of good fishing spots, a sauna and tennis courts. Horses roam gravel roads. Some of the 115 prisoners here -- all men and serving time for murder, rape and trafficking heroin, among other crimes -- stay in wooden cottages, painted cheery red. They come and go as they please. Others live in "The Big House," a white mansion on a hill that, on the inside, looks like a college dorm. A chicken lives in the basement, a guard said, and provides eggs for the inmates.

When you ask the cook what's for dinner, he offers up menu choices like "fish balls with white sauce, with shrimps" and "everything from chicken con carne to salmon."

Plenty of people would pay to vacation in a place like this.




Prisoners live in bungalows where flat screen TVs and sofas and fully kitted out, with decking for sunbathing...etc

I saw a documentary about a prison isle. Not sure if it was the same 'prison', but it was somewhere in Scandinavia.
I understand that these 'punishments' are debatable, but we should realize that many of these prisoners will leave the prison (or this isle) one day (murderers don't deserve this IMO, but that's another debate).
Criminologists explained that most of these former detainees behaved much better after their detention than 'normal' prisoners.

Probably because they are white men there (from what I gather from the pics).  From what I understand they don't imprison the North African trash, as they know no better...

That said, if it's going to happen, you should at least have a picturesque locale for the event, wouldn't you say?
