Mt. Gox, the biggest exchange for the currency, virtually disappears with its founder gone, website down and office vacated.  What's at risk? »

Mt. Gox website says all transactions closed "for the time being"

(Reuters) - Prominent bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox posted an update on its website on Tuesday, saying a "decision was taken to close all transactions for the time being," citing "recent news reports and the potential repercussions on MtGox's operations."

The website went dark on Tuesday and its chief executive told Reuters that the business was "at a turning point." Mt. Gox halted withdrawals earlier this month after detecting what it called "unusual activity.

"We will be closely monitoring the situation and will react accordingly," the website said.

the first bitcoin rollers made all the money they wanted.  think about the 11 million initial allotment of coins.  No one actually knows who owns them all.  They got to $1000 a piece.  You don't think those Japs that started it didn't cash in their billions and fuck off from it leaving the idiots in tow holding a bag of worthless shit?  It was a total pump and dump scam.

It's safe to say anything Vince touches turns to sour milk.  Literally anything that guy bets on you can bet the opposite and become wealthy.

There will be a second wave before it dies.  A lot of people bought into this at $500-1000 so they will desperately try to unload.

This scheme was pretty obvious from the start.  It was currency speculation plain and simple.  Only early adopters made any money.

BTC believers are bozos.  Tulip bulb mania of 1637, baseball cards, pet rocks, beanie babies, etc...

Digital fiat currency is still fiat currency.  Even better, it can be fully traceable and controlled.  At least paper cash has anonymity.

Whatever can be created with a keystroke, can be deleted with a keystroke.

Don't be fooled... the only real money and storage of wealth is this:

Even the dollar is pure electronic currency.  When you get a loand for a home, do you actually ever see a real dollar change hands?

I'm talking about physical paper dollars.

You're obviously not going to buy a big ticket item like a house or Ferrari with cash.

You can keep cash at home in a safe and spend it at your leisure... no paper/electronic trail whatsoever.

TPTB want to do away with cash... too much anonymity and no way to track it.

I believe crypto-currencies are a beta test for a one world digital currency.

I'm Creating My Own Digital Cryptocurrency

I'm sure you're all familiar with the bitcoin by now. But what you might not know is that there is a whole ecology of alternative cryptocurrencies being brought to market (initially just mined, then put on an exchange and traded for fiat) with their own special functions -- e.g., coins whose mining sends computational power to BOINC research projects (gridcoin).

As CEO of Vincent Goodcome Enterprises, I'm always looking for ways to innovate and expand my burnt appendages into new markets. Today I'd like to share my latest innovation:

Introducing, the goodcoin (GOC)

Technical specifications:
60 second block time
10 goodcoin's reward per block
60 second transaction confirmation time
scrypt-based, proof of work algorithm
Retarget every 4 hours

RPC/P2P Ports = 8505/8506

The goodcoin will be a revolutionary new cryptocurrency that will only gain value as its adoption rate increases. Initial miners will get free digital coupons to Caliber Fitness and Caliber Grocery upon successful mining of each block (in addition to the standard 10 goodcoin reward). Goodcoins make a great holiday gift as well because I'm sure they'll be useful for something sometime in the future (haven't figured that part of the business out quite yet).

More news to come!!

It is still silver... like gold, it is recognized anywhere in the world.  It has value ANYWHERE in the world.

I guess these bitcoin people never heard of a debit card.

You know...electronically transfer my funds in exchange for goods and services.
