Mayweather to fight Maidana in May 3
« on: February 26, 2014, 12:30:27 AM »
I guess Khan was too fast since he already beat Maidana.  ::)

Dumbasses, esp Mexicans, will go out and buy this shit.

2010-12-11      Marcos Rene Maidana   29-1-0   vs          Amir Khan
Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino, Mandalay Bay Events Center, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA   W   UD   12   12
referee: Joe Cortez | judge: Jerry Roth 114-111 | judge: C.J. Ross 114-111 | judge: Glenn Trowbridge 113-112
WBA World light welterweight title (supervisor: Jose Oliver Gomez)

It will be the smoothness and savvy of Floyd "Money" Mayweather against the raw power of Marcos "El Chino" Maidana on May 3 in a 12-round welterweight unification bout.

The Showtime pay-per-view matchup was announced Monday night by the co-promoters of the fight, Golden Boy Promotions and Mayweather Promotions.

It is expected to be at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, where Mayweather has fought his last eight bouts, though there have been reports that the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. is pushing for the fight.

Mayweather (45-0, 26 KOs) is the world's consensus No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter and 10-time world champion, and Maidana (35-3, 31 KOs) is a slugger from Argentina who is coming off a stunning upset of previously undefeated and heavily favored Adrien Broner on Dec. 14.

Mayweather, who turned 37 on Monday, is coming off a year in which he fought twice for the first time in years, and won convincingly each time. His dominating victories against Robert Guerrero and Canelo Alvarez made him the choice of several publications as fighter of the year. He won the WBC welterweight belt against Guerrero and the WBC and WBA junior middleweight titles from Alvarez.

The Alvarez fight was the largest-grossing fight in boxing history with more $150 million in revenue, including a record live gate of more than $20 million.

In Maidana, the WBA welterweight champion, Mayweather is facing one of the most hard-punching opponents of his 17-year career.

"Marcos Maidana's last performance immediately brought him to my attention," said Mayweather. "He is an extremely skilled fighter who brings knockout danger to the ring. I think this is a great fight for me and he deserves the opportunity to see if he can do what 45 others have tried to do before him -- beat me."

Maidana, 30, dominated Broner from the opening bell and knocked the Cincinnati fighter and three time champion down twice. Maidana connected on 231 power punches on his way to a unanimous decision by margins of 117-109, 115-109 and 115-110.

The victory was the fourth in a row for Maidana, the former WBA 140-pound world champion whose hard-charging, aggressive style has earned him knockouts in 82% of his victories. That ties the late Diego Corrales and Jose Luis Castillo for the highest knockout percentage of any Mayweather opponent and is one of the highest in the sport.

"I am extremely happy to be facing Floyd Mayweather because it will give me the opportunity to show the world that I am the best welterweight in the division," said Maidana, who is expected to bring in Latino boxing fans on Cinco de Mayo weekend. "I just handed a great defensive fighter his first loss and I plan to do the same to Mayweather. I don't care whether he's the best and undefeated. I will bring some real Latino power to him on May 3rd."

Leonard Ellerbe, the CEO of Mayweather Promotions, called it "an extremely dangerous fight for Floyd as Marcos Maidana is a technical knockout artist and continues to show us that he gets better with each fight. Maidana showed so much in his last performance, he's clearly at the top of his game and is a great matchup for Floyd."

Mayweather posted to his Twitter and Instagram accounts on Super Bowl Sunday asking fans to vote for his next opponent between Maidana and Amir Khan. The vote was overwhelmingly in Maidana's favor.

"In Marcos Maidana, Floyd Mayweather may be in for his toughest opponent ever," Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, said. "Maidana is the type of fighter who will find out if Floyd still belongs on top of the pound-for-pound list. He's strong, tough and aggressive. In giving Adrien Broner his first loss, he showed that he won't be intimidated by talk, a big fight atmosphere or an unbeaten record. I give Floyd a lot of credit for stepping up to the plate and testing himself once again. He is a true warrior, and the fans will be the winners on May 3rd."

Stephen Espinoza, the Showtime Sports boss, said, "Marcos Maidana is a boxer whose fearsome power can change the trajectory of a fight with a single punch. Couple that with his ferocity and perseverance and you have the recipe for an incredible fight on the grandest stage of the sport."

I thought the contracts had already been signed and mayweather and khan were fighting. mayweather would of destroyed Khan easy. I am a big maidana fan but he does not have the defensive skills to beat mayweather. Maidana is a all offensive fighter with poor foot work. britally strong puncher if he can actually hit floyd. broner was like a 6-1 favorite and got beat bad but broner is nowhere close to mayweather when it comes to footwork and defensive skills. easy fight for floyd. I can't see how the money would be better but I like this fight way better then the khan fight.

I thought rousey was fighting cain next. at least she thinks she is. No way cain stands a chance! whats the odds on that fight 80-1? Jones will dominate for awhile nobody can fuck with that reach he has.

Tired of Mayweather hand picking his opponents. Pacman who is already on the down side of his career said he will fight him and give every cent to charity. Maywather won't fight him because of the risk. Manny should have never gone up in weight. He would have retired unbeaten and have the honor of never ducking anyone. Whoever pays to see this upcoming Mayweather fight is throwing their money away. The guys is way to slow for Mayweather who will beat him in a boring fight.

Garbage fight.
Maidana is just a crude slugger. Alexander outboxed him comfortably and even a shot to shit Morales gave him problems.
Khan wouldnt have been much better.

So many better fights to be made. Mayweather is a clown.

I suppose we can't have it both ways. In a boxing Eutopia, every world champion would have had to beat the best in their weight class, however many of the 'champions' we love to love, simply wouldn't be champions if the promoter & pick/choose aspect of the game didn't exist.

Has FMW ever fought the best at 147 and 154?  Right now, it's Lara and Bradley.  You know he won't fight the winner of Manny and Bradley unless one comes out the fight with confirmed brain damage.  I won't even bother talking about the other guy.  He has taken it to a new level and still sells himself as best ever. Maybe he's talking about his career pre-144.

Mayweather has to pick his fights carefully these days in order to protect his "zero losses" record.

The whole business of choosing Khan or Maidana was just a cheap publicity stunt - we all knew he wasn't going to choose Khan because that would be a joke fight. Khan just wanted it as an easy pay-day so he could retire with some money in the bank to keep the new wife happy. Maidana is a crude fighter but he has a puncher's chance, plus he beat Mayweather's friend Broner so Floyd has a bit of an axe to grind.

I respect what Mayweather did earlier in his career. His win against Corrales was super impressive.
However, the last few years have been dull.
Maidana is a typical Floyd opponent - limited and flawed but popular and coming off a good win.
All his recent opponents were like this.
Not only did the Paquaio fight not happen, but neither did fights with Martinez, Williams, Margarito, Bradley and younger versions of Cotto and Mosley.
Mayweather is a 154lb champ. He should fight Lara, the guy who I believe would provide the toughest test, not Maidana.
Fight someone decent or don't fight at all.  :D

Lara peppered Paul Williams and got robbed.

Lara took a fight in a small ring and cracked Angulo's eye socket.

Lara laughed Trout out the ring.

Che will try and sell you that Lara is too big for FMW but is smaller than Canelo.

FMW will not fight a lefty with a 72" plus reach who extends his left from distance.

Enjoy.

If he's not fighting PAC who the fuck cares

His name is money mayweather right and a fight with PAC man would be the biggest money fight in history
Yet Floyd refuses to fight PAC
First it was PAC was on drugs yet he had no problem fighting convicted drug taker over the hill Shane mosely

Floyd is pussy blatantly scared to fight PAC
choice is an illusion

Around 5%. He is in serious shape. I know bodybuilders have a warped mind set of what an athlete should look like but he is in top shape. To bad Floyd and his management hand pick these slow poke fighters to get picked apart by Mayweather.

Maidana is far more dangerous than Canelo

maidana has decent hand speed and punches hard in combination

he's a better version of JL castillo who gave FMW a tought 1st fight

broner's style is very similar to FMW

this is actually a dangerous fight for FMW- if this is the fight where FMW finds some of his speed and reflexes have slowed he's in trouble

i predict a MASSIVE upset by maidana

Lol same old thing canelo was suppose to knock him out but was punching shadows instead.  Floyd will finish off his career with a manny fight specifically with no arum involved and take a 70 30 split when manny is desperate for money.  No one can beat him just face it his defense is too good better boxer and is lightning fast.  There will always be people saying he should have fought so and so but the outcome would be the same.

Hes going to clown maidana while broner eats popcorn and learns ringside broner is not in the same league as floyd.

Manny is a hype job, and money bag for Arum and Roach. The best fighters at 147 and 154 on the board are Afro-descent guys like Lara and Bradley in which FMW won't touch with a 10 ft pool.  It's no different than FMW Sr selling BS that Paul Willaims at 147 was too big but Lara, a small man, handled him.  FMW is running a good scam with his Money Team, selling a lifestyle to a generation of idiots who shell out PPV money vs the smart people who yawn at his fights for free.  He's definitely not top 3 147/154 all-time.  But there are sheep who will buy it when he retires 50-0 on tomato cans and a burned out midget, Manny.

Lara or Bradley will sell no worst than Ortiz and Guerrero.  He can't knockout Lara or Bradley, so both of them will take it to the cards for a SD.  FMW's "0" ain't having that.

I remember when you were saying Mayweather was afraid of Berto because he was black.  Now he's afraid of a a true 140 pounder in Bradley and Lara the guy who barely beat Angulo?  You're a retard.

I am a big Maidana fan. Chino can crack but has no footwork and is a all defensive fighter. He would really have to confuse mayweather the way he did broner early and get a similar 1st or 2nd round knockout like the broner fight to have a chance. If maidana can just knock Floyd down once early in the fight he has a chance. Maidana runs out of gas! He throws a shit load of punches(most of them wild) and floyd will either be confused by the style or really take advantage of it.

Lara is fucking fast! He fucked up angulo bad! Angulo quit on lara! Angulo looked like he had a tumor on the side of his eye. They def had to drain that fucker. Lara uses thumbs if you watch he throws a puch and twists his thumb in. I think the fighter with the best chance is lara and a fight that could really happen. Bradley would be a good fight but he is a top rank fighter so that is a no go. provadnikov would be intersting too if floyd would brawl with him like bradley did,but same thing Top rank fighter, pacman top rank will not happen.

Floyd says there is no way manny is natural but that was years ago! manny did vada testing the during the whole vada camp. mayweather needs to just sack up and fight manny especially since he says he is ducking nobody. Mayweather has balls to fight chino. chino is a dangerous fighter just has no footwork and no defense but hell none of us would want anything to do with fighting chino so props to floyd on this fight. Lara would of had a better chance but still i am excited about the fight. Chino deserves this fight(win or loose).

khan is a better boxer than he is given credit for

his glass chin clouds peoples views

khan has the foot work and punch speed to at least make the rounds competitive

maidana wont land a punch
T
