first contest? lost to  Frank Zane

2nd contest? lost to Sergio Oliva.

At that very moment, NOBODY (Pearl,Gironda,Yerton,Gold etc ) saw Arnold as someone who could actually remain in the USA and take superior bb, Sergio Oliva out of the pic.

However; Joe Weider and Sergio never came in to an "agreement"

He always downplayed the role drugs played in his career. As if he stopped using them at the 1980 Olympia
when it reality he used them for basically every movie role he had until 1989

Yes, he had drive.. but so do many people.

I like Arnold a lot, but I stand by my words... the roids made him.  He also had a habit of being in the right place at the right time.

That said, he was very fortunate in other ways as you mentioned, being blessed with a magnetic, alpha type personality and drive, amazing muscle genetics, height, and the good fortune in being in the right place at the right time.
