I actually was a decent friend of a National level competitor a couople of years back and asked him why he wanted to be a pro.  He said (and I am in no way exagerating this), "Because that's where the big money is..."  He is yet to turn pro, so I assume he still is not rich.

I was thining about this and honestly, there is no reason anyone would want to get into competitive bodybuilding at the pro level. Ronnie has set the bar at the limit of human genetics and current drugs. In BFTO 2000 Cutler (at this time he was not Gutler) talks about how he got into bodybuilding for the healthy lifestyle he wanted to live. In 2000, Cutler did look healthy. This was probably before his use of GH/IGF/SLIN. But, in order to compete he had to complete become a drug experiment. Who wants that?

There are undoubtably some good reasons why being a pro would be fun.

Nobody is saying that they want to but I can understand why someone would.  Its a unique lifestyle and you might risk dying for it but you burn bright for those years you are a pro.

Everybody knows by now that its a dangerous lifestyle too but we're all trying to feed our ego some way and it should come as no suprise that some people become pro's to do so.

With the dangers of being on stage to be compeititve, Why do it!  The bottom line is that you will end up walking the earth  looking like the average meathead i.e. Yates, Wheeler and Levrone.

Because like everybody in a "sport" they want to be the best.

Your last sentence is complete bullshit. Why is there so much hate on past bodybuilders because they quit the lifstyle... They where living is 24/7. I can understand they quit with it after they stop competing. You think guys that won the olimpics 10 years ago stil run the 100 meter like the top guys do ?? Or that o top swimmer wont get fat one he stops training and eating shit ?? When you stop training stop the lifestyle everybody goes back to "normal" There is not one sport once you quit everything training/eating/living/ you be just as good as you was when you where doing al those things.

if you have to ask the question you will never understand.....

all people have goals in life... becoming a pro bodybuilder is a legitmate goal....

why do people spend years in college, then law school only then to work endless hours at a job they do not like giving up everything to become a "partner" or to climb the "corporate ladder".....

you can look at alot of people's goals or what they consider important and think :

that is a waste of time.....

to each his own

Well the life as a professional bodybuilder is not for everyone, you can always chose what millions of people worldwide have - a life in front of the TV, stuffing yourself with fast food, gulp it down with a six pack of beer and finish it off with a cigarette!  ::)

Why is there so much hate on past bodybuilders because they quit the lifstyle...

I think that the backlash comes from the fact that most pros do not tell it like it is.  They practically dismiss the role that drugs play in creating their cartoon-like physiques.  They swear that they have unbelievable genetics (and, yes, some do) and that they have an incredible work ethic (and, yes, some do) and that they have the heart of a lion . . . . and that drugs play a very very small part in their monster development.

Then when they're suddenly retired (and "off') and they've shrunk down to average meathead size, it's because . . . "oh, he's only eating one meal a day now" and "why in the world would he ever step inside a gym again?"  Sure, caloric consumption and training intensity & consistency will decline once retired from competition, but can anybody seriously deny that all of the "stuff" that many of these guys took was largely responsible for giving them their super human look?

If more pros came clean about the role of drugs in professional bodybuilding, then the haters would lose their ammunition.

It's not a point of being a hater and I think alot of people are misinterpreting the origin of the thread.  I admire all the bb's they are amazing athletes and the sacrifices they make to the top can only be done by very few.  It just seems that the sport has become about bullshit.  I am 30 now and all the top guys (well most of them) that I saw growing up are now sick, dead, or in jail.  So much for being positive and living a healthy lifestyle.  I guess I am dissillusioned about the sport.

If you're replying to my post that's directly above your's, I meant to put "haters" in quotation marks.  You're right, the way the professional iron game is being played inevitably leads to disillusionment.

Bluto, I am refering to (know get ready) Momo, Flex, Don Long, Mike Francis, Tom Prince, Paul Demayo, Craig Titus (but not a fan of his), Ron love, Sonny Schmidt (lung cancer), I sure there is more.  It is just a bummer that they guys are not around anymore in the bb scene.

You are dissilusioned on bodybuilding in general. Bodybuilding is not healthy ! Overfeeding with callories is not healty. Training heavy til failure is not healty for you joints. Competing naturel of not is not healty. Extreme low fat % is not healty. Bulking up cutting down and bulking up again is not healthy.

If you wanne be healty eat 3 times a day a "healthy" meal eat 200 cals under your needs. train 3 times a week with some cardio en light full body workouts. Wil you get big nope wil you be healty yes.

A lot of sports is not healthy on the top levels, and I think the number of bodybuilders with health problems is exaggerated.

well i wouldn't really recommend the lifestyle of a professional bodybuilder, there's obviously plenty of bad things that can happen at that level, it's not very healthy to carry that kinda weight around, even if the side effects of steroids a lot of the time are exaggerated there's still plenty of risks involved with it (can get you in trouble with the law, affect people on a mental level, making people cross the line to regular, hard drugs etc) but that being said i don't find a large number of bodybuilders dying, going to jail etc. most of the people from the 70's, 80's, 90's and 00 are still around from what i can tell.
that being said, there's been a few bodybuilders in recent years as we know that had some major health problems and we can only hope others pay attention and do not go down the same road.

The desire to become a pro is something that is hard to explain to someone who doesn't want it. I guess its because they love it and want to better it in some way. They want to make a difference and they believe bodybuilding us their way to do so
