Why become a pro?
« on: January 15, 2006, 10:14:32 PM »
With the dangers of being on stage to be compeititve, Why do it!  The bottom line is that you will end up walking the earth  looking like the average meathead i.e. Yates, Wheeler and Levrone.

who knows, i once had plans on trying to become a pro, but knocked some sence into myself and thought it would not be worth it to put myself through that. my life is worth more than competing and being "pro" huge.

I think a lot of people armed with killer workouts and knowledge think that they can do it, but all the possible health problems is too scary and to end up walking around with people saying your half the man you used to be is too much to handle.

So a trophy is worth the risk??    By the way I am very happy in my life no envy or hating, I am just wondering what drives someone to do all that risk and little reward.

many people spend their lifetime working a job that just keeps them at the poverty line.  :-\

People do lots of things with high risk and little reward.

I think, that some of these guys, believe that being a champion bodybuilder means something. They do it for the spotlight, and also because, even though bodybuilding doesn't pay much, it still pays more than most of the regular jobs they would otherwise qualify to do. While there are educated pros, like Milos, Shawn, Nasser, etc, most pros are as dumb as a bag of rocks and would have a hard time earning a decent living, without bodybuilding. So there.

i think with most of these pro's is thats all they know how to do. BodyBuilding is what they do best. Would you rather a guy like Palumbo being a doctor...

I'm gonna get flamed to hell for this but oh well here goes. I think the reason some guys become pro's or want to become pro's is because they have nothing else worthwhle going on in life, it's their way to stand out and shine. Even if it means being # 167 on the list of top pro's, it's still something. Anyone agree/disagree ?

Well... Look at the Big_D thread on the Pic board. Only Priest is holding his own when being compared to that bloke IMO. Probably because he's a food lover as well.

So what's the point of becoming a pro when there still is guys like that around?

They do it for the same reasons pretty much all athletes and people into sports worldwide do it - to challenge themselves, to see how far they can go, to compare and compete with others, to try to reach the highest level. They do it because they're not satisfied being nobodies, they're not comfortable being some average joe. And I guess if you don't have that will, drive and dream of achievement, you will never understand.

Then there's of course the possibility of making money, to do something you're good at and enjoy for a living and who wouldn't want to do that?

to a degree i agree
it might even be simpler than that.
take a dude with low self esteem
massage their ego into believing it to be not harmful, everlasting and rewarding.
and BAM
they're hooked.

With any job comes risks, perhaps bodybuilding there is more risk involved. How many people on these boards can actually say that they are getting paid for what they love? (Besides Grant Michaels...who!???)
No different than athletes in Football, Baseball etc trying to be the best. Some succeed where others fail.

Most pros have the satisfaction of saying this. Ok so these people may not make millions but still...

Just think how rich 240 would be if he got paid for writing on this board.....

Why would someone sky dive?  Why become a Nascar driver?  Drag racer?  Climb a mountain?  Hell why not just sit home and watch tv?  Alot of things have dangers involved but if it's something you love doing then why not strive to be the best at it.  I compete and would like to be pro just so I can say I made it to the top level of my chosen sport.  I won't freak if I don't make it and it's not my top priority in life either but it would still be great if I did get there.  Life is short as it is so live it how you want instead of questioning others for choosing how they live their lives.
