It's a gradual process...the media and education system are swaying public opinion.

When?  If you mean now then I think what you seem to be implying is right; Counter protesting folks would go crazy.

It wasn't always that way, though.   Socialism isn't quite the same thing as communism but in America of the early 1900's up until before WW2, socialism wasn't so unpopular in the USA.
